This seems like some sort of machinist protractor but what kind exactly is this one? The other ones I have seen don't look as robust.

Thanks

Stacy- while that's a fancier answer, and it does essentially mean "angle measure".... Any goniometer I've seen was used for checking things like range of motion for arms, legs, fingers, etc. in Orthopedic and PT clinics.

If you go to a machinist tool supply outfit and ask for a vernier protractor they'll show you a tool like the one in my photo. If you ask for a goniometer they'll probably say, "Gesundheit!??" ;)

I agree that goniometer is not used much any more by machinists. It merely means that the tool is used to measure the angle between two planes ( orthopedic, wood, or steel), usually pivoted arms.
A protractor is the current term popular for all types of measuring tools, but many will not read the angle as shown in the photo, but a goniometer will. A set of divider points is also currently called a protractor....and that doesn't measure any angle.

In guess that one might say that:
All goniometers are protractors, but all protractors aren't goniometers.
