What Traditional Knife to ring in the New Year?

CUTS LIKE A KRIS, those covers are out of this world.

I'll probably just carry my Huntsman or Farmer. It might turn into a situation where knives are easily misplaced.

Steve, D2 is a much more heavily alloyed tool steel than either CV or O1. 0170-6C has been identified as Case's CV, and even if it isn't exactly, it's very close.

This comparo is from AG Russell's website.

Thanks Jeff. That explains D2's high resistance to rust.

Probably a pioneer. New years eve will be spent at a friends house and will be loaded with kids running about. So I'm going to go with the most crowd friendly carry.

I will be going with this for Jan. 1, 2015:

I won this in LegHog's give away earlier in the year. So, I think it deserves to bring in the New Year.

I will be home, probably watching Winnie the Pooh or Curious George with my daughter, drinking sparkling cider, and wearing a house coat, but I'll have the 14 forum knife in the pocket as I kiss my wife at midnight. I may even live it up a little and have ice-cream. :D

Hope you all have a great and safe one.

I'm going to have to do this in two posts. The system will not let me put it in one: (ACK. It made me use 3. I don't know why.)

I'll have to get AG's folks to talk to Paul Tsujimoto (Tooj) at Kabar. The AG Russell Chart does not match Paul's data. And Paul's metallurgical and work history is such that he knows exactly the composition of 017-6 as well as 0170-6C. Neither of which matches the formula given on AG's web site.

0170-6 was an alloy made by Sharon Steel. It was the original Carbon V when Cold Steel knives were made by KaBar.

0170-6C was an alloy made for Camillus when Camillus was making blades labeled "Carbon V" blades for Cold Steel and making blades of the same alloy labeled "0170-6C" under the Camillus name.

Both contained additional alloying elements not found on the AG Russell Chart.

From a response by Tooj

"Here is the correct time line.

1) Cold Steel Carbon V was first produced in the Alcas Factory (Cutco and KA-BAR) Mid 1980s, Carbon V was originally 1095CV/0170-06/50100B.
2) Cold Steel moved to Ontario early 1990s. Carbon V started out as 1095CV / 0170-06 / 50100B but while at Ontario, Dan Maragni removed the small amount of nickel from the formula.
3) Cold Steel moved to Camillus approx. 1995. Carbon V stayed 0170-06 minus the nickel.
How do I know all of this?...I worked at all 3 factories."

Here is the chemistry for Sharon Steel 0170-06 (From Sharon Steel ref.book)

C 0.95-1.10
Mn 0.30-0.50
P 0.025 max
S 0.025 max
Si 0.15-0.25
Cr 0.40-0.60
Ni 0.25
Mo 0.06
V 0.15-0.25.

I have a copy of a cert for steel sold to Case. It's composition is a good match for the data AG Russell lists as "0170-6C". So that entry in the AG Russell Chart could be labelled, "CASE CV"

Brett, glad I won't be the only one.

I'll be carrying my 032 stockman. Cv, chestnut jigged bone. Best knife I got in 2014....fine way to end the year.

My Moore Maker 5200 (2000) is in rotation today. I love this knife...love 1095. It was a gift from a customer so it's very special to me. The wife and I do not leave the house on "amateur night" and will watch he ball drop with a glass of champagne. Happy New Year!

Hope you get your wish my friend, that's a pretty good way to end any year in my books :) Hope you have a better 2015 Kris, and try and find a vest pocket for that nice-looking knife ;)

Thank you my friend- Where did you get that picture of me?!? (Actually that pic was taken around the time I was born!)

This little beauty
I love wharncliffes and I love his knives- that needle tipped gem is beautiful. What are the covers? When will it become mine?!? ;) Elegant little beauty for sure.

I agree, which is why I'm thinking I may soften stance on these type of covers. The chatoyance is great!! Still don't think I care for most used, but if I see more that change in the light like this one does.... I picked it up because of the other features- slanted pinched and threaded bolsters, long pull, double half stop, swedges, $10...... The covers just added somethingb else to it!(and I have it today to match my green scrubs- kind of like vest pocket for you Jack!)

Great knives and info in here as always :)

Happy New year everyone!

Think I am going to bring in the new year with this guy
