I've got a Smith's 3 in 1 sharpener that works great for all my conventional edge knives but I also have a couple convex knives that I'd like to strop to maintain the edge. On the cover of the Smith's (a sliding piece above the diamond stone) is a perfect spot to glue a piece of leather for that purpose. I'm just not sure what to use. Old belt or?

Love his stuff and have a couple of his sheaths for my F1's but I just want a piece of leather to glue to my Smith's sharpener, not a manufactured strop.

i just use a piece of 8-9 oz leather that i bought for general duties for all my strops.

if you have anything resembling a leather/saddle/motorbike clothing store in your area, you can probably find suitable scraps for cheap there.

if not; belts, purses, even shoes! can be found cheaply at consignment shops or in your own closet and make fine strops.

:p check the link again. Scroll down. There is leather listed for $5.

Otherwise check Michaels Arts and Crafts or JoAnn Fabric. They sell Tandy leather for crafts and such. You can find some leather remnant packs for about $4. It contains scraps of different weight leathers. One should suit your needs.

I have used old belts. I also like to lightly sand the surface of the leather so it gets a sort of suede feel to it. That way I can rub the strop butter on just like using a crayon.

Oooh, we have a Michael's here. I'll check them out when I go to town next. And thanks for showing me I'm a dumbass; I completely missed the plain piece of leather on the JRE site! :D

Go to a Goodwill store and check the belts out. I can find good harness leather belts once in a long while. You can make strops out of them. I buy all the leather I can for various projects.

I bought a hide of kangaroo leather with a buddy of mine years ago. He uses it for piano rebuilds (Apparently some part inside a piano needs leather) and Use it for making strops... I had a few old EZ Lap diamond bench hones that are junk and I never use so I knocked the diamond part off (Kept it to file machetes and axes) and made strops out of the blocks... Kangaroo is real nice and I find it puts a wicked edge on my blades... I just Flitz to load the hide... and my edges are all scary sharp.
