What type of rock for flint?

Stone is one of those things that can be difficult to read sometimes with a variety of applications. Just when I think I found the perfect piece for something, it holds surprises that I didn't expect and my course has been changed. For me, even the basics are not always predictable and I guess this is part of the attraction of knapping.

The obsidian, in my experience, is just not going to throw sparks like the highly siliceous flint and chert. However, natures glass - obsidian - can deliver sufficient sparks from a steel if it is all one has.

I haven't been there in years but, the area was always very enjoyable and very interesting to explore.

Yes, Anza Borrego is great, especially this time of year. Because of all the rain we've had in the last few months, I imagine the wild flowers are going to be phenomenal this year. I hope to get out there before they're gone. Oh, and before summer starts, too: can't take the heat like I could when I was young.

The Anza Borrego desert, once an inland sea, has a surprisingly diverse supply of rocks, sea shells, fossils and creatures, and is just a lot of fun to wander around in this time of year.

At the moment, though, I have to confine my collecting to the local area. Even the hiking trails in Balboa Park provides some rocks to fool around with. it's odd, but I've never seen anyone else pick up rocks over there, whereas I've found several small quantities of chalcedony to play with (yes, they spark).

Well, if I could get lost out there, I would most certainly enjoy myself with the plethora of things to explore. From archeology to the huge variety of plant and wildlife; it had it all from what I can remember. Wonderful place when you can look beyond the extremes and see the treasures. Hopefully I can experience it again before I get too old. :)

I'm already old — but that's not necessarily a bad thing. At my age, I tend to just amble along, taking the time to check out every little thing. It's amazing, the things I missed when I was young, that I now see in far greater detail.

I hope you do get a chance to experience it again before you get too old.

One of the really neat things about San Diego is having the ocean, mountains and desert all within a short drive. I spend time at all of them, when I can come up with the gas money, and the old truck's running.

I'm jealous of ya'll's mass amount of flint. wow
