I've been lookin' at my knife accumulation, and I began to notice a trend, early 70's, Slipjoints and Lockbacks, 80's, Lockbacks and Liner Locks/Walker Locks, 90's Liner Locks and Plunge Button Locks,(ala Automatics) and Mid Locks, 00's Liner Locks, Frame Locks, Axis Locks.

My accumulation seems to consist of 50% slip joints, 25% liner locks/framelocks, 20% lockbacks/midlocks, 4% other,(Axis, Twistring, ect) 1% Straight Knives/non-folding.

With all the new locks comming out I'm not sure where the future will bring me, More traditional or more radical.

What does your Collection/Accumulation consist of and what do you see yourself buying in the near future?

Easy for me to say. 99% of my locking blades are locback
with one liner lock ( magna) and one frame lock (cuda maxx).
All the rest of my knives are fixed blade or slipjoint.

I like my life simple.:p :p :p

I have about 21 knives. 7 are Liner locks. 2 are compression locks. 5 are mid lock/lockbacks. 1 is an axis lock. 1 is a rolling lock. 1 is a ring lock (Opinel). 1 is a SAK. 3 are small fixed blades of sorts. Of all the problems I have had with locks, lockbacks/midlocks have never given me any. I think this says something as to why they are still around even with all the wonder locks. I really like the Axis lock, but most of the axis lock designs really don't do a lot for me. Personally, if it is done right most locks will be adequate for my needs. I look at the role a particular knife will play and evaluate its performance accordingly. I do not need a dress folder to hold 800 lbs of force. Similarly I would not be satisfied if my Chinook gave up the ghose at only 100 lbs. Horses for courses. If I like the design and the lock works for its intended role it's all good.:)

New collector, so my collection is small..3 fixed blades, 1 liner lock, 1 lockback.

Mid-Locks - 14
Lockbacks - 2
Liner Locks - 8
Framelocks - 2
Fixed - 5
Twist - 1
Slipjoint - 5

Lets see - that makes it 37 knives.

I see in my future:

Compression Locks - Spyderco Trakkr' and Paramilitary
Ball Locks - Spyderco knife to be named
Framelocks - custom knife to be named
Axis Lock - only if Benchmade makes the 940 pattern with Carbon Fiber

Lets see.

Fixed Blade = 17 (I know, I know, that wasn't the question :))
Liner = 15
Lockback = 7
Integral/Framelock = 6
Slipjoint = 4
Axis = 1
Opinel = 1 (what the heck do you call that lock, anyway?)

- Mark

Liner: 6 (30%)
Frame: 2 (10%)
Axis: 1 (5%)
Lockback: 2 (10%)
Slipjoint: 1 (5%)
Bali: 4 (20%)
Fixed: 4 (20%)

There's actually a bunch I left out for various reasons, but that's the gist of it.

edited to add percentages

Liner lock: 5
Button lock: 1
Balisong: 1
Fixed Blade: 2
Arc (SOG) lock: 1
Lockback/Midlock: 1
Framelock: 1
Slipjoint: 2

Slip joint - 77
Liner lock - 23
Bali's - 6
Frame lock - 2
Lockback - 12
Rolling Lock - 4
Axis Lock - 2
Fixed Blade - 14
Auto's - 5

As you can see I'm just starting out, but hopefully I'll be able to really expand my collection soon...

6 - Fixed blades
3 - liner locks
2 - Lock backs
1 - "other" ;)
1 - SAK (Vic Swiss Champ)
1 - Leatherman Supertool

Next: LOTS AND LOTS of Liner Locks, lock backs and Fixed blades of different sizes........

Who knows what the future holds hey?

;)

Warthog, most of the slipjoints are 80-100 year old antiques and I keep them in a 8 drawer oak cabinet, most of the others I've got a glass display case and then I usually always have 3-5 on me.

I'm too lazy to actually do a head count, so all I can say is that my modest collection is made up of slipjoints (mostly SAKs), lockbacks (Buck, SOG, Spyderco), axis locks (Benchmade, obviously), frame locks (CRK, Camillus) and ONE liner lock (to remain unnamed), which I'd like to get rid of.

I've soured on liner locks, have given away or sold all but the one I just mentioned.

My favorite? I have a soft spot in my heart for the time honored lockback: it's simple and effective. However, my absolute preference is the CRK frame lock, simply because I believe it to be the strongest.

I'll do a head count later at home (what a TERRIFYING prospect!)

So this is subject to revision.... (and here it is!)

0 Fixed (still accurate)

0 Axis (still accurate)

0 Compression (what the heck is a 'compression' lock anyway?) (still wanna know!)

4 Frame Lock - all Kershaw (accurate)

7 Liner locks (Nope - 9)

6 or so Lockbacks (NOPE! - 10)

6 or so Slipjoints (accurate)

Add 1 twist lock Opinal #6

Add one push button auto - ???? CHEAP!!!!

Add two Exacto knives (hmm, could be considered fixed eh?)

All buying is on hold indefinetly! (had a line on a $33 with shipping CRKT Falcon - the AC in my truck is WAY more important!!!!)

Joe Shmoe - As Cheap A$$ed a dude as you will likely ever find! (No matter where you look!!!)

Of the 6 folders in my house, 2 are rolling locks, one is a lockback, on is a twistlock (Opinel), and the last two are slipjoints.

OH! And besides what the heck is a Compression Lock, what in tarnation is a Rolling Lock????

The Rolling Lock is REKAT's proprietary "superlock". It's hard to explain, but easy to show in a picture. Unfortunately, I don't have one handy cause I'm riding down I-81 (the wife is driving) at the moment. Damn, 3G cellular service is kewl :D

Well, maybe I shouldn't even bring this up, and not that I really expect anybody to listen to me, but you just said that you have 200 locking knives, 198 of them are lockback, and the other 2 are something else.

Unless you have at least 100 knives in your collection, you cannot have 99% aything, or 1% anything.

The same thing goes for you T. Erdelyi

Hey, now worries :D
