Very hot water and soap-rinse very well under hot water-dry thoroughly and then I use Hoppes gun oil on a paper towel and rub it into the wood-never had one not look new.
 
Yes, it may seem odd, but a little gun oil rubbed on by hand in small amounts at a time has always worked for me.

Never did it by design....just in putting a little oil on the blade and other working parts it happened that the wood always perked up nicely.

Seems like one should use a linseed or other oil designed for wood......but what works is fine with me.
