what vg-10?

Mcusta has a whole line of knives, something like 9 styles, each with 3 or 4 variations and they're all VG10, even the damascus is VG10 damascus. Of course there are limitations like , no linerlocks ( pretty much all Mcustas), no spydercos( Enduras and delicas have the bulletproof lockbacks), which exclude some of the best deals on the best knives made currently. Oh well, good luck. Joe

I hate to break it to you, but the Griptilian basically has FRN scales. Look at the Endura and the Delica. If you don't want the FRN, look at them in the G10 variants. AG Russell also has quite a selection of VG-10 blades.

Moki makes most of their knives with VG 10. I have one of their lockbacks and the fit and finish is outstanding.

Hi Crbauhs,

Spyderco introduced VG-10 into the knife industry, and they probably use more of it than any other company. It is an excellent blade steel that was originally developed for the plant grafting industry.

It is an expensive steel to purchase and process which is why it is not commonly available from many companies.

If you really want to test VG-10 in a performance folder format, a Spyderco Endura4 or Delica4 are a consideration, available in FRN or G-10 handles.

I know you said you don't trust liner locks which is why you don't have a Lahar, but I gotta say I think the Lahar would be about your best bet. I've had mine for about a month now and it's a helluva a knife. It locks up super solid and I'd bet ya a $100 bill that it wouldn't fail on ya in normal to heavy every day use. The flipping action is really nice too and it really "thwacks" and locks up when you open it. It also fits great in your hand. I have fairly large hands and the curve of the handle makes for a super secure grip. A big bonus is that it can be had for about $50-$60 which is a fair bit under your $80 mark.

If you're still not sure about the Lahar having a liner lock, take a trip to the nearest knife shop(i have to drive about an hour to the closest one to me, but it's worth it to handle a blade before you buy it sometimes) and handle one for a few minutes, I'm betting you'll like it.

Almost forgot, I got a Spyderco Endura 4 with the stainless steel handles a couple weeks ago. I never thought I liked the looks of spydie's either till I handled this one. I hated the FRN handled Endura then I spotted this towards the bottom of the display. This is also one heck of a knife and feels super solid while at the same time carrying and handling like a smaller more manageable sized blade. It can be had for around the $70 mark and is not a liner lock so this could be a consideration as well. Again, a trip to the knife shop might change your mind on spydies, it changed mine!

Hope this is helpful!

hey guys. thanks for all the replies. i know about mucusta, but more than i want to spend and a bit small. the endura and delica, id go cally 3 over either one. adn i know that the grip is basically frn. it jsut isnt my favorites. ill have to kep and eye on the cally 3, falkniven folders, adn maybe i will check out a lahar. now if only the manix was in vg-10 and available. that i could definatly do. i actually like the manix look.

While VG-10 is a nice steel, the differences between it and S30V (the steel on the Manix) or any other premium steel being used these days will more than likely not even be noticeable to the average person. Get the knife design that appeals to you the most, chances are the steel will be very good even though it may not be VG-10.

Also keep in mind, there is no "best" steel.

it isnt that i dont like the other high end steels, it is i just already have them and am looking to expand my collection. also, i hear vg-10 takes a remarkable smooth and polished edge, almost like 154cm. s30v takes a more toothy edge. i know there isnt much difference in the high end steels, but it is jsut something to do almost...

Sorry, I didn't read the entire thread to see if you already explained this. I agree with what you've said though, VG-10 does seem to take a more polished and smoother edge compared to S30V.

If you like VG-10 and you like the size of the Manix, this might be way out there, but you might want to check out the Spyderco Superhawk. Very comfortable, not too curved hawkbill blade and the compression lock is always cool. I liked it as soon as I put it in my hand.

Al Mar SERE 2000.

I second that, great knife, just reeks quality. A little high priced though. I also have a Spyderco Police which is VG-10, its my workhorse knife, only complaint is the stainless handle get really scratched and the fact that its stainless is kind of frightening as far as slipping my hand onto that mean looking super sharp 4 1/8 inch partially serrated blade!

Consider a Spyderco ATR. These use a insanely overbuilt version of the compression lock ( think of it as a upside down frame lock). They are some of the very smoothest opening/closing knives I have ever run into. the blade design is just plain useful - you can get it in PE or CE - whichever you prefer. Apparently there are "new" ones still floating around on shoping while drunk ( evilbay) for $100 or so. Users occasionaly show up for less in the trade section. I also think VG-10 may be the most underappreciated blade steel around.
To further confuse things - I've owned a lot of Kershaw liner locks - at least one that went for 4 or 5 years of continious daily hard work use - never had a problem. The Lahar is worth a couple of times what it sells for IMHO. Frankly - you wouldn't see so many of the best custom makers staying with liner locks if it was a inheriently flawed lock. What liner locks do require is precision machining and assembley - good ones will last for a very long time in hard use. Badly made ones will start out as junk and become scary fast.

buddy, choosing VG-10 but not the Spyderco, is like choosing a car with Ferrari red but no the Ferrari itself lol

I have both the Lahar and the Endura. My Endura has been with me a long time and it has stood the test of time and hard use to the point that I can feel a little play in the lock when I push the blade edge against something solid. But til now It's the one I have by my side, 24/7. It has never been re-sharpened ( SE) and has been used on everything. But it is still sharp.

The Lahar is getting the rough treatment now. Had it since February and It has fallen down a flight of concrete stairs, been used as a pry bar for lack of anything else at the time...still locks up tight. The edge though has started to dull a little bit but still useful for cutting tasks I have.

You should consider them...value for the money. Both top-notch.

S30V will give you a mirror edge. Take a look at the cardboard wheels richard j is selling.

i know s30v gives a mirror polish, but the edge is still toothier than what i want. and right now i am looking at the cally 3, lahar(ill give linear lock a try again), and a falkniven folder. all vg-10 and all have good reviews so it is jsut whatever i like best and can afford...which is all of em.

ya i am sorta leaning towards the cally 3, i figure i can give spyderco a try again. i mean the shape has to be good for everyone to love it. and if not then i can sell it here i guess.

I've thinned down my knife collection to 3 so I could afford my first custom. One of the knives that I kept was the ZDP/CF Caly 3.

ok well if everyone says cally 3 who am i to argue? i gues when i get payed on tuesday ill try and order it.
