What was benchmade thinking when they designed the 761???

I couldn't be happier with my 761, plenty of detent, I prefer tip down, and I have no concerns about the lock. If BM comes out with one that is smaller I'll be buying one of them as well. Brad.

They should have made it an axis lock instead of following the framelock bandwagon.Im back and forth with this one, im sure ill wind up getting it sometime next year one way or another....

I picked up one today, and I love it. I'd seen the video with the poor detent, so I shook the hell out of the knife and couldn't get the blade to come out. I think some first production issues were dealt with in the next run. Buttery smooth. When disengaged, the blade free falls like an axis lock. Im loving it. I prefer tip up, but it's never been deal breaker for me. If a knife only comes with tip down option, I'll get by. It's not like I've ever, or ever will need to be Quick Draw McGraw.

Not trolling......just disapointed!! My 2 main disappointments are 1) the lock is way too thin and the cut out is way way thinner. 2) there's no or little detent.

Had the knife for all of 2 hours, bought it from my brick and mortar , and I just didn't trust the knife , swapped it for a spyderco k2 and haven't regretted it in the slightest, it is a good design ,IMO it just needs some slight improvements and it would be a great knife. FWIW the one I purchased was the 1st production run. Also frame locks tend to give a false sense of security , take a strider for instance and put it side by side to say an emerson, sure more ti is contacting the blade but check your cut out, the cut out is thinner than the TI on an emerson liner lock, I may be incorrect when saying this, just my way of thinking is its only as strong as its thinnest point.

You are incorrect. The frame is beveled. So it appears thinner. However less than a third through the lockbar it is thicker than my ZT0801 and my Benchmade 760 Lum lockbar cutouts.

It's sad that such horrible and erroneous prejudices were posted so early. Because they continue to be repeated even after they've been discounted.

The guy you are quoting owned the knife! The OP also OWNED the knife. The video actually SHOWED the knife. Just like nobody should discount your positive experiences, you simply cannot discount the fact that there have been several examples of this knife having problems. Just be happy you got a good one and hope Benchmade continues to strive towards excellence in all their designs.

What EXACTLY justifies the all caps and exclamation marks? The QUOTED is specifically about a thin lockbar cutout. Which is wrong. It's not an opinion or something that is only on bad pieces. It's wrong. The lockbar cut out is as thick or thicker than my three other titanium frame locks.
As for the VIDEO it only shows the detent travel. Which is the same amount as mine. The travel doesn't prove anything about detent strength. So the video is useless.
I stated that problems might be evident in a percentage of pieces in the first production run. Repeating the comments made in that video reminds me of the 3 seconds of Rodney King video in a perpetual loop.

Been EDCing this knife every day for a month now. Detent sucks but its tip down so no big deal. Tweaked the bar a bit to strengthen it a bit, def helped. Made a slight mod to knife as my only real gripe is I couldn't get my thumb on the stud to well, and access to lockbar was limited. I love this knife so much I stopped carrying my CRK.

761 is a sweet looking knife . I got one on Saturday and I if it wasn't for the poor Detent I would keep it . The knife is very smooth and light for the size . But the 761 can be consider a gravity knife in NJ . The poor detent on this knife just a small wiggle and it comes down . I sent an email to Benchmade explaining that the poor detent can be a problem for me and that I wanted them to ether replace the knife or fix the issue haven't heard from them . I know it will take more than one day before they can answer my email . I have it up for trade . :(

My apologies. I was being a sh1^head. It's just that you seem to be discounting several people's actual experiences with the knife as a byproduct of heresy or rumor.

For the cost of this particular blade, Benchmade should expect some backlash for even the small number of bad experiences expressed so far. To me, if the detent isn't strong enough to allow for tip up carry (which I suspect isn't offered because of this exact reason) then the detent isn't strong enough.

I'm glad you like the knife and I'm happy that it seems like only a small number of people are disappointed however for that price I would prefer not to gamble at this time.

I completely agree that Benchmade has work ahead of them. MAP is way to high to receive anything other than Perfection.

So have we discovered a pattern or no? Are the weak detent examples from the numbered first production? I know I have said it before but my example has a very strong detent and the blade will not come out with vigorous shaking. Mine is not a numbered first production.

My 761 came a week ago, barely in time to depart on a road trip, and it has been awesome as my only road folder. It has been to SF, Long Beach, Mojave Desert, Phoenix, camping in Sedona, and arrived with me in Albuquerque today. It has cut rope, done food chores a few times, shaved fire sticks, in addition to all the normal menial daily knife tasks. It has been riding kind of rough with keys and an alox SAK but, hey, it's a pocket knife :o

Lighting sucks; it is night and all I have is a lamp:

What a cool knife. I like it better every day I use it :thumbup:

They call that the Benchmade Ares.

I got a response today from benchmade saying that they will definitely do some adjustments on the knife due to customer feedback.

That's nice to hear. I expect they realize there are problems and will fix them on their nickel.

I don't discount people reports and experiences but I have come to realize a lot of what we believe is "standard" or "normal" is far more subjective we realize.

I have a 761 and it's super smooth. Is the detent weak? I don't think so. But it's not super strong either. So this thread got me wondering so I took out my 18 year old AFCK, my 10 plus year old Sentinel and 910's ( 3 of them) and the detents are about the same as the 761, especially the AFCK.

Now if you asked me if they have weak detents I'd say no, their normal. Some here might think they are weak though due to their experiences. Especially if there primary experience is with flippers.

My bottom line is, if its not a flipper that requires a very strong detent to generate force to deploy the blade, and it holds the blade in place and the blade doesn't open unintentionally then it's fine with me. If the blade is dropping out of the handle when or if you don't want it to then that's a problem and you should get it fixed.

That's my take anyway. So far I'm extremely happy with the 761 and think it one of the finest knives I own.

Good point. I only have two unassisted flippers. My ZT 0801 has a super strong detent where my Kershaw Groove has one much weaker than the 761.
So in even my experience with flipper detent is varied. My 761 is way stronger than my 760 Lum and about the same as my two Militarys.
