I had a POS sheath knife I bought from a hardware store in the sixth grade. We used to hunt and fish together in the small town I grew up in. I soon found the mild steel knife NEVER held an edge, rusted, bent, and eventually broke.
I found a WWII German bayonet in the rafters of my Grandfather's barn complete with sheath. I carried it for several years and discovered what a quality steel, big blade could do. I used it for everything from a machete to a hunting knife to a digging tool, to splitting wood.
Later a USAF Pilot's knife replaced that bayonet for hiking and hunting. It was simply more compact and easy to carry. But that wonderful example of blued steel German craftsmanship was the knife that started it all.
