  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

What was the most popular knife when you were in school?

I graduated High School in 1981, in Kentucky.

Started carrying a knife around third grade, an Imperial pen knife with faux MOP scales. Moved on to a Queen stockman in high school.

Most boys carried a multi-blade slipjoint of some variety, but some had Buck 110s. The sodbuster was popular with a few. I don’t recall any particular brand loyalty, but Case was held in high regard. Boys’ knives were largely purchased in the local department store and were made in the USA. The more esoteric Tree and Eye brands from overseas were carried by “old” men (who were almost certainly younger than I am now).

The only time I was ever scolded for having a knife was when I was playing with it instead of doing what I was supposed to be doing. The teacher just told me to put it back in my pocket.

Now I’m a high school teacher in a rural school district. Knives are forbidden, but if I see a student with one I revert to old school and tell him to put it back in his pocket.
