I seem to remember coming across a website last year that was selling a long knitted tube that could be worn like a neck gator, a balaclava, cap, and some other ways. Made of a good technical material that wicks moisture, dries quickly, etc... Supposed to be good comfortable, versatile cold weather protection. They had a whole page showing the different ways to wear it / tie it for uses.

The only thing I can find now is the "neck buff" (google "buff" or "neck buff" and you'll see what I mean), and those are just butt ugly AND overpriced. The one I'm talking about was made by a military-tactical type gear company.

Winter will be here in a month and I was wanting to get something like a balaclava for riding around on a utility vehicle. I thought this might be a better choice because of the versatility.

Does anybody know what this was? Also, anybody use a balaclava or this neck gator tube thingy and have pros and cons to either.

thanks,
lukus

I picked up a sweet 300 weight fleece hood, windstopper with cinch cords and a standard mouth guard so you can breath through it. You can wear it as a hood, balaclava or a heavy neck gator. Looking for more info on it for you...hopefully in the morning. Sounds similar to what you are talking about.

Dantor, I have had one of theirs for years, and it's fine as a neckwarmer, but it isn't as long as some of the others, so you can't warm your neck AND pull it up over your mouth and nose.

The Recon Wrap is thin and lightweight and won't stifle you in summer but will hold in some warmth in winter. (It's magic. :p)

I also have a wool watchcap and GI neckwarmer (AKA neadover) that are double thickness loosely woven and I don't often put a hood over them no matter how cold it gets here -- OK, that's only about 10 to 20 F.

I have a big head (well it's what they say!) and my ears and cheeks get cold so I wanted something like that, a longer one would be nice! TY bro :)

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but here are some pics of a piece of headgear I picked up by a local maker (I think they are local...)

Edited... Just re-read your post and this was NOT what you were looking for but hopefully worth a look for you anyway.

300 wt fleece, brown is windstopper, grey is regular fleece but double layered.
EXTREMELY warm and they make another version that is even heavier.
They are made in a LOT of colors but I went with subdued tones.

My SAR team did a winter 24 hr pack test last winter. We were out there with no sleeping roll, no sleeping bag etc. We had freezing rain and snow all night and this would have been PERFECT under a shell layer. The grey fleece is way easier to breath through.

Here you go... (and sorry if I look too serious. haven't had second cup of coffee and nobody around to say "cheese" to )

Pic 3 is stuck in memory somehow and I can't get my correct image (size) in there lol. Oh well. Sorry you had to look at that ;)

Oh, btw. $30 for that lid. Money well spent

Dantor, I have a big noggin too and it fits real nice.

Contact Aranda Fleece Products (Oregon) 503-666-1578 if you need one. I couldn't find a website for them.

For a neckwarmer, it's hard to beat a good silk bandanna. I use one when I ride my motorcycle in temps as low as the high 30s and my neck never gets cold. In the summer you can wet it and it will help to cool you down.

The ones I have are approx. 32x32 inches and the local western store sells them for about $12 IIRC.

I have one of these for quite a while now:

Neck Gaitor

I like it. It's cheap enough, warm, and long enough that I can wear it doubled when just around my neck. I use it most often when riding my motorcycle on those crispy mornings, works great. Also in the fall, when in the tree stand I'll pull it up as a facemask.

Thanks everyone! The Spec-Ops Recon Wrap must be what I was thinking of. Funny, I searched balaclava, neck gaitor, neck wrap, neck buff, and a few others and didn't come up with that.

Dunner, that's a great looking piece of gear. Didn't want something quite so heavy (warm) but they might have a single layered fleece. Thanks for the number, I'll give them a call.
