What was your first “expensive” knife?

Bought this Benchmade somewhere in the 90’s I think at the House of Blades in Cowtown. It cost $100 which at the time seemed really high for a knife. It has been carried and used more than any locking blade I own. I certainly have got my money’s worth out of it! Though I had carried a knife since I was a kid, this kick started things into a level change. Many have come and gone but I kept this one around. What about you? image.jpg

Probably this Strider custom Nightmare GB back in the early 2000's (long before the Mickey shit-storm):

My first job was when I was in the 5th grade in school. I worked in the Summer on a tobacco farm from 6:00 am to 6:00 PM with an hour for lunch. The pay was $.25 per hour! So my first "expensive" knife was probably a dollar Imperial from a card at the local Standard service station. I have always bought task oriented knives, I think that best work knife I ever carried daily was a Kershaw 550sst at maybe $30.00. Most of my life I got by with inexpensive knives until my Son gave me a Griptilian, which is an expensive knife to me today. I have never paid over $165.00 for a knife, and that a WWII blade.

ZT 0200. $160? Everyone was talking about the "overbuilt" and "super tough" knives of ZT so I bought one. I liked it but eventually got rid of it.

It still might be the most expensive knife I've ever bought and that was ... 2006-7? I don't venture over the $125 barrier very often.

Well, this is first real good quality knife I ever bought that started my knife hoarding career. I bought it right after getting into the whole online knife scene and found it at a local gunshow. I bought it from Kershawguy at his table.

When I was 11, I took the plunge and spent $4.00 on a Ka-Bar at a hardware store that had them on sale. That was a lot of dough for me then. The original knife is long gone, but a friend of mine found a duplicate and gave it to me.

I’m in my 60’s now but certainly remember going to the stores and looking at all those knives in the display case.

I was a late bloomer to this craziness. My first not-cheap knife was this Kershaw Blur S30V earlier this year.

The first (and only) knife I’d consider expensive was an Ochs Worx Solarstorm. I still love the looks of it, but I can’t see beating up and devaluing a $300+ knife, so it never gets used. Pretty sure I won’t ever be spending that much again on a knife I won’t use precisely because it costs so much. I’m just silly like that.

PM2 in S45VN, due to lack of available Millies. Started a long thing with knives and Spyderco in particular. Standard satin/black G-10. Replaced those scales with some Metonboss Ti scales. Very beautiful, should have included sheath in the pic.

Now...just with the PM2s...

(DLT Cruwear, Crucarta, S45VN/TI, fully-milled Rex 45, textured orange full-milled aluminum BD1N, brown G-10 and CPM-10V, Maxamet, and murdered-out Wharncliffe S30V, in case anyone is wondering. I have custom wooden scales on the way, I feel like the stainless S45 fit better with my Ti scales, but a carbon steel that patinas would fit the natural wood look. So, I am thinking of putting either Cruwear, 10V, or Maxamet on the wooden scales.

Mini Barrage, $115. My wife had given me a Griptilian, which was my first taste of upscale knives, but it was only $85 at REI. It turned out to be a very popular knife among knife sales persons at Cabela’s, who all seemed to want to show me their knife. I liked the size, but was agnostic on the assist. It didn’t open any faster than the Grip, but I had no objection to it.

A relative with a heroin problem stole it for drug money. Ha later told me that Pawn America had given him $85 for it, which, if true, meant they thought it was about a $400 knife, which would make it by far the most expensive knife I ever bought.
