What was your first childhood knife? Who gave it to you?

Oh man... I can't remember which birthday it was, doesn't matter, but I'll never forget the production my granddad made of both of us getting in the boat and going to the mainland to the everything-store for me to pick out my first knife. Hard to recall the details and the knife is long gone, but it was a fixed blade fishing knife with a plastic handle and sheath. We spent the summers cottaging on his island in Georgian Bay, hours of fishing every day for months, so at the time it was a very practical decision for an 8 or 9 year old. Buying a 4 inch fixed blade for an 8 or 9 year old might be arguably less practical, heh.

An old Colonial slipjoint that my grandfather gave me for my 5th birthday in 1955. I still have it in a box on my dresser.

About 50 years ago my father allowed me to adopt an old equal end jack with carbon steel blades from the tool box. I was somewhere between 6 and 8. When I was 12 he gave me a brand new Schrade stockman for my birthday.

The other day my wife was telling me her first knife was a Remington nehi. But got rid of it in previous marriage because she was told you need to. I just bought one on eBay in great condition and it will be part of valentines day.

What part of the Georgian Bay? I spent every summer and many winters in Stokes Bay on the Bruce Peninsula during my childhood (age 3-18). My son just made his first trek up to our family cottage with me this past year (My avatar pic is us on our family's dock) and I am sure that is where he'll get his first knife.

My Dad gave me a small Western Bowie (very similar to the Boy Scout knife but a little longer) when I was five--forty years ago. I still have it, and it's in excellent condition, despite being used heavily by me and by my ten year-old daughter for the last few years.

First was a Buck 110 from my father. I've still got it. I use it as my outdoor, game and fish folder. It's a great steak knife, too!

My first knife I bought at a garage sale. I was about 7. The garage sale was about a half mile from my house. I was riding home on my bicycle opening and closing my new knife, when it bit me real good. It cut most of the way "up" my finger nail (don't remember which finger). I don't remember what happened to the knife...the only other thing I really remember about the knife was it was a slip joint with green scales.
