So I just ordered my first custom knife from another member on here (small sebenza 21). While I am waiting for it to come I thought it would be fun for people to post about their first plunge into the custom knife world. What was it? Was it worth the extra cost to you? Do you still have it? Of course pics are always welcome.

My Pocket Kilo by Dylan Fletcher. That started the madness. Have since snagged a few more.

I have my eye on a few others next.

First Custom was a Ron Post a drop point skinner with a recurve. I was staying at my aunts cottage and this wife and mother in-law had a stand set up in town. Couldnt say no.

My first custom technically was a Strider SnG frag grip w/ dagger grind. I guess I say technicall because I didn't have to place an order and work with the actual knife maker. I just logged on to a site and bought it.

My first custom where I spoke with and had some say in the knife was my Jeremy Robertson El Patron flipper. You can buy these at Howe's the same way I bought my Strider, but I got mine directly from the man himself. I even had a phone conversation with the maker.

Both were very much worth the money. The custom strider is so much smoother and more refined over its production version and the El Patron is just bad ass all the way around.

Uh guys...Sebenzas and Strider SnGs are production knives, not customs. No doubt very good, but they don't qualify for the custom designation.

First actual custom or mid-tech?
My first actual custom was my Gary Mulkey lockback, which was a gift from my grandfather about 15 years ago.
The first actual custom i purchased was my Tom Krein PSK. (Beauty!)
First mid-tech was my Lg Micarta Sebenza Insingo (also a beauty!)
Theirs nothin' like actually working with the maker though. Todd (T.A.) Davison made me my first "personal" custom traditional slip joint and it was the best experience and best knife I've ever owned. Thanks Todd!

My yuna hard 1 (dreamy stare). I still have it,one of a select few that will always remain in my collection. I don't carry it anymore due to the fact that when people needed something cut, flipping it out make me appear more frightening then helpful.although I use a multitool for just about anything nowadays,my dedicated folder is just along for the ride.

My first custom was this one from Ray Laconico

I liked it so much that I ended up with these fixed blades from him

And this folder

And two of my sons have fixed blades from him, and one of my sons has a folder from him. You could say that we are fans.

A Sebenza isn't a custom knife. Its a mid-tech, and a great one made to a custom level.

I can't remember my first custom. Bought so many at Blade they kinda run together. Of the ones I have left I think it was either a Wayne Hendrix, David Mosier, Bob Dozier, or a Sean O'Hare. Not really sure which was first.

My first one of TMHunt's little O1 neckers. My first custom, my first neck knife, my first O1 knife, and my first wharnecliff all wrapped up in one blade. Still my favorite necker out of the half dozen or so I've picked up...

I got 2 x loveless style hunting knives from TK steinglass with hamon..

I am only new to the custom world but I wish I started earlier...

I remember those! And I remember wanting them...

The first custom knife that I designed myself and had made for me according to my specs is a Daniel Fairly chopper, which we called the Havok X.

I've had some knifemakers make me a knife based on their design, with some unique personalization to make them my own and thus a one-off, and also some that have pre-set options to make them somewhat unique, but there might be another one out there with the same options. I guess I would still consider those customs, as in custom-built for me.

I've also got a number of production knives that I've had customized with re-handles, blade treatments and reprofiling, etc. but I don't think those count, or do they?

Mine was a Carson large model 4 I bought in '98 or so for $400. That was all the $ in the world to me then, so much so that I sold it a year later for what I paid for it. Live and learn.
