What Was Your First Knife?

A jigged-bone handled camp knife from my grandfather when I was 12. I’d do almost anything to have that knife back.

The first “nice” knife I bought myself when dipping a toe into the hobby was a Cold Steel Recon 1 in AUS-8. I gifted it to a friend who needed a blade.

One of these. Blue plain edge.
I was probably 11-12 at the time and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Had it a short while - went to a summer camp, counselor saw it and freaked out, took it from me. Guy disappeared never got it back at the end of camp. THat MFer 😭😭

When I was around seven or eight, my uncle took my cousin, brother and me camping. He bought each of us a really nice K-bar style fixed blade. My older brother got a full sized one, my cousin and I - who are significantly younger - each got a mini version. I don’t know whatever happened to that knife but I wish I still had it. It started a lifelong love affair with carry blades.

When I was about 6 (1958 +/-), my father let me adopt an old equal end jack with black synthetic covers from the tool drawer. It was likely older than I was at the time and was well "patinaed". My first new knife was a medium Schrade stockman with Delrin covers that I received for my 12th birthday. A Buck 110 came later. I still have the 110. The others disappeared.

Buddy of mine gave me his SAK/SAK clone when I was like 8. Started grabbing crap knives and daggers and swords off of BUDK and walmart around 15 to 18, and then bought a regular Griptillian at 19 or so.

It was some kind of little slipjoint. I'm pretty sure it had two blades, and I don't think either blade was more than 2" long. I don't remember how it looked or who made it. What I do remember clear as day is whittling a canoe with it when I was 7, turning the corner inside the front end, and having that blade slip off the work and slice the back of my index finger wide open. Knife and canoe are long gone but I've still got the scar.

Probably a Cub Scout knife in the early '70s or Boy Scout knife in the mid '70s. I don't know what happened to it. The first knife I bought with my money was a Gerber in the early '80s. I could have stopped buying then and saved myself a LOT of money.

Boy Scout folder when I was 8.
Dad was a big proponent of always having a knife with you. Back then (early seventies) I could even carry it at school. All of my pants had right front pocket wear marks.

The first one I can clearly remember, was bought for Cub Scouts , along with a whole nifty camping kit .

It was some kind of "hobo" knife , official folder , with a fork and spoon included . Carried that thing everywhere , not just camping ! :p

I was pretty excited by the whole Scouting experience , and wish every kid could have that opportunity .

A hardware store folder, back in the mid60’s. I’ll have to look around, I may still have it somewhere.
