What was your first traditional knife? (Fixed and/or folder)

I think, blue Cub Scout.

Mine also. My dad got it for me when I was 7 or 8, when I started Cub Scouts. My mom was a den mother. Good memories. It might still be around somewhere but I haven't seen it in many years.

My first traditional knife from my youth was a Swiss army tinker. My first non-SAK traditional was buck 303.

My first knife was a Swiss army knife that was given to me by my grandfather for Christmas. For many years it was my only pocket knife. The first knife that I bought with my own money was a Schrade 8OT.

My first knife was a small swiss army type or small camp knife, given to me by my uncle Jerry on Christmas eve 1979 I was 5 years old. I just took it out of my night stand drawer to look at it, it's been thru hell got a broken blade missing pile side scale but it is one of my most prized possessions

My first was an Old Timer stockman. My dad gave it to me when I was 12 and I've loved traditional knives ever since (I'm 40 now). I wish I still had that old thing. There's something really special about when a dad gives his son his first blade. It's a rite of passage and I can't wait to share that with my boy. He just turned three so I have a bit before that happens, but my little girl is six so she gets first dibs. That just means I have to keep getting more so they have a nice selection

Case Sodbuster Jr. from my Dad when I was 17 which I still have. I started late with pocket knives but have made up for it in the interim.

I started a thread on this knife and my Dad a few months ago. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1426123-A-Knife-from-Dad

I just read your thread, what a terrific story! I might just contribute my own story there, though I have kind of touched on it in other posts. You have a wonderful legacy from your father, I love it.

There is something to be said for sentimental value for sure. Sometimes the most battered and used blades hold the most value and character.

I couldn't agree more! I took my son shopping for his first knife a couple years ago and it definitely was a special day. I let him choose, my criteria being a bit more expanded than that of my dad's, and he settled on the Victorinox Swiss Army Fieldmaster. It was a good choice and he was beyond excited, I will have to dig up a pic from that day. My daughter is up next... I'll need to find something in pink...

Either a blue Cub Scout, or black Delrin schrade stockman. Both long gone in a house fire, along with other priceless heirlooms, like the ornate Mexican silver and steel spurs(4pairs!!) from paternal grandfather. He was a California highway patrolman, back when they still used horses, not that they were riding spurs-the goads on the inside were 1/2-3/4" thick! But they sang(jangled) when you walked in them, because the rowels were so big.
Thanks, Neal
