What was your first true custom?

My first true custom was a J.D. Smith folder, (pre MS), 5 1/2" 3 bar composite damascus, mokume bolsters, and mastadon slabs and full filework. It's still my favorite folder.

the first custom knife i bought was a marvin poole bird and trout knife from a local and now long closed knife store. i didn't even realize there was such a thing as a "custom knife" at the time. i gave it to my father who still uses it.

the first "intentional" custom knife i ever bought was a matt lamey bowie off of bladeforums. a great knife. i ended up trading it back to matt. that turned out to be a frustrating experience to say the least

my first "true" custom...ie one i had built to my specs... was a tom mayo TNT. still have the knife today :)

I actually ordered 2 at the same time and they were delivered to me at the show in Austin 8 years ago.
Both were Bradshaw folders
A 5 bladed pearl stockman which is on my site and I dont care if it ever sells.
And a 2 blade trapper that has been sold.
Been a Bradshaw fan ever since.

Mel Pardue folder in 70 or71.Still collect his buttonlocks.Anyone have onefor sale???????????????

My first custom knife was a slipjoint made by Devin Thomas with firestorm damascus, stag scales and mokume bolsters. It had a very sad, untimely end when it was on a blade show trip in the same bag as some contact solution that leaked every where. I wish these kinds of memories wouldn't be brought up in threads like this.

I gotta know... how did the "contact solution" harm the knife? What kind of "contact solution" was it? Saline, cleaner, enzyme, multi-purpose solution? Do you still have the knife?

This post is painful enough to read, and then I noticed who the poster is. I would hope that this wouldn't be the end of the knife-couldn't you two clean it up? I understand that that saline might have bad consequences for the damascus, but surely the rest was ok? If you two couldn't fix it......

I am really intrigued by this.

First custom knife was a Bob Terzuola M-18 Combat knife bought in the mid 80's (there's one for sale in the "individual for sale" forum..NOT MINE THOUGH)from him directly. Damn thing infected me with the knife collecting bug and I've been suffering with that affliction ever since.

If I'da stuck with stictly collecting knives instead of a financial diversion into a bad marriage...ohhhh the sweet blades I could have now. Had a shot at a Damascus Harvey Dean Bowie w/ Ivory handle back in the early 90's at the east Coast Custom Knife Show...coulda had it for about $750.00....Wife said "NO"....

and so it goes......

It was an unusual kind of contact solution that at first cannot be placed in the eye, but then transforms to saline overnight in a special contact case. It leaked out while it was still transforming, so it was probably pretty caustic. It would have been ok if it was just rust, but the blade pitted pretty badly. As an interesting side note, a Microtech of 154CM with aluminum handles got the same treatment in the bag, and it totally rusted over, it was way worse than the carbon steel damascus.

My first custom (purchased from a dealer) was a Dozier PGK (with ironwood) - still have it.

My first custom where I dealt directly with the maker was a Cook Lochsa - S90V and tip up. Still have it, as well.

Lessons learned:

1. Eye glasses work just fine, and protect your eyes from foreign objects.
2. Putting anything in your eyes besides Visine is not a good idea
3. Caustic contact solution and knives do not make good bedfellows, I hope that you do not store anymore knives anywhere that there are liquids that could destroy them.;)

Best Regards, and truly sorry for the hard lesson learned,

My first custom knife was a Billy K dagger in about 1990. It’s a skeletonised design with a beautiful dark wood fitted into the spaces in the handle.

Then life got in the way.

My next custom was a Sean O’Hare Silver Raven in August 2005. This knife has really made the custom bug bite hard.

my first custom is a Mauricio Dobruski balisong knife...i don't think i'll ever part with it. i paid $350 for it and i thought i was crazy for willing to pay for such a high price. so i convinced myself that it's ok one custom is all i need. WRONG! now i hang out here in BFC and cannot stop collecting. :)

Here is mine, a damasheep from Jens Anso. My very first custom, and still my favorite. I carry it right now. :)

First custom I bought was a small upswept (persian style) hunting knife made by an amishman named weaver who also sold baked goods at the farmer's market. It is cut from a sawmill blade (L6), handled in local walnut, pinned with copper harness pins/rivets, came with a simple sheath. The knife is indestructable and is daily abused by my family in the kitchen. The point is sharp but fully intact after 15 years, the grind is fully flat with a convex edge that will not chip and it'll get dark but not rust to the point of pitting. It gets sharpened every 4-6 months when it stops cutting tomatoes. Best $25 I spent on a knife.

My very 1st custom was made back in April of 2002 by Ken Largin of Kelgin Knives from my drawing in M2 and elk stag.

Wow... That sure is ... hm ... interesting. It's a style of bowies you don't see anymore.
