I'd like to know if there are any sites that let you design your own fixed blade hunting knife. I found one, Buck I think, but they only did folders. I would love to design my own knife, please help.

Ginsu, any number of custom makers on this site would be glad to bring your sketches to life. By the way, it might be helpful if you filled in your profile, who knows, you might have a few knife makers in your area.

I don't want to take anyone's business, but the cost of a knife custom made to your sketch may be a little pricey for your needs. I say ask around the forums for a good knife in your price range.

Sometimes it's painful to put a 3-500 dollar knife through hard use... Sometimes ;)

That being said, a beautiful handmade knife built to your specifications is wonderful to behold.

Also, Buck makes more than just folders. The classic buck fixed blade can be got for around 50 bucks - or less if you get a deal

I could probably make you a knife of your design. Feel free to check out the gallery on my webpage in my signature if you're interested.

WOW. you guys responded really fast. You're awesome. I will definitely be sending you some sketches, but know that I can only put $150-200 per month towards the knife, so the more it costs the longer it will take me to buy it. I only know a little about knife design so I will need some feedback on the sketch on how to make sure it's functional. I know it has to be full tang, but I'm not sure what kind of blade steel is best for a hunting knife. I'm thinking high carbon steel, but then I heard about this supposed "super steel" called S30V. Is that any good? Is Damascus steel all it's cracked up to be? What about a guthook? I really like the bowie design, can that even work with a guthook? What about serrations, and where should they go? I like the idea of a pommel that can smash and grind things. I want this knife to be as utilitarian as possible.

In the meantime I would like to know if there are any websites with a "design your own knife" thing like BuckKnives.com has. You get to select from a few different lists of parts. You choose the blade steel, handle type, engravings, and whether to add a guthook, all on the website with a preview of your knife that updates with each click. I want to see something like that, just with more options.

First off, at least from me $200-400 will buy you one heck of a knife, and I usually let a customer pay as it goes if need be. If you look at my site, (its not as up to date as it could be, but there are plenty of pics) you will see I have done all of those things you are wanting in a knife. My knives are meant to be used and abused... If you need a review, I am linking some up as we speak...
Next, steel choice. Damascus steel is fine, but is meant more for looks than performanfe. Yes it can perform very well, but will come up short when compared to homologous carbon steel. San mai damascus is an option that will give you a carbon core and subsequently cutting edge with all of the looks of damascus steel. I personally suggest d-2 as my personal use and abuse steel. S30v, and subsequently all of the iterations of it are fine, and also perform admireably, and are stainless steels... There are many iterations of each kind of steel... This link will give you a general idea of how many types of blade steel there are out there. I usually tell someone to let the maker choose the steel based on your performance requirements. No offense, we already know more about this than you will be able to research in a fair amount of time. We work with this stuff every day... at least I do...

As far as a website like that, AFAIK there isn't one. I would hate to see you "lego" together a knife knowing that a custom is truly what will fit you best. All of the items you described will effect the overall design, and that type of site just wouldn't be able to keep up. For instance a bowie blade looks one way, but adding a guthook and serrations might change the way I would design the whole blade...
Email me, it generally takes me from as little as an hour to a day (depending on what I am doing) to shoot you a sketch based on your design input...
Except for today, lol. I am stepping out the door with fly rod in hand and will be out of email and phone service for about 24 hours.

Oh, and here is a link to a review of a knife I commissioned for a guy recently. Camp knife, but designed for the same type of abuse you describe. And he was a complete stranger to me prior to making a knife for him... I feel it was a bit overboard, but I'm not gonna turn down a good review ;)

Pick a custom. You won't regret it.

You can Email me a sketch when you're ready - if you're interested. I like to take my time on the knives I build so I can wait. Price depends on design and the materials you want. Personally I like 1084 and 1095 steel.

I'm not aware of a design your own knife feature on a webpage. I've always just used pencil and paper.

What will this hunting knife be used for exactly? what size blade? I could come up with a design for you. Again, feel free to email me for more details. Thanks for your interest.

Wrong forum fellows. This is Shop Talk, not The Exchange.

Thread moved to Services wanted. Discuss it and pricing there.

Thank you for your interest in helping me, Bernard. I will Email you soon with a sketch. You should know that I am sending it to a few other people also and I want to be up front about that. I just want to talk to more than one person before I decide, you know.
