Please forgive me if this is too personal of a question, but I'm curious, what were the top 10 best sellers last year? I saw the thread on the factory forum about “what models should be cut from the inventory,” and it got me curious as to what models were most successful/ made the cut? I'm sure the delica and endura made it, but what other models?

Thanks,
Mark

you could almost make a good guess. The Deacon and Yab, would probably Nail it!

All I know is Sal has said the stainless handle Police has been in the top ten for the last twenty years. He doesn't know why either, but they keep selling so he keeps making them.

That's amazing, Yab! Would someone guess the top 5?
Delica
Endura
Military
Caly
Native

I would hazard a guess at the diminutive Ladybug as well. I think I also heard that the Rescue knives sell a fair bit especially to the firefighters and other emergency type professions.

The catch here is that you can "count" two different ways. If you lump all variations of a base model together, I'd bet the Delica would come out on top. If you view the sales figures for each variant as a separately, then it becomes anybody's guess as to which sells best.

The first method, though interesting on one level and legitimate for some purposes, is of no real value for deciding what to drop from the lineup. In the case of the Delica, I'm sure there are at least a couple out of the 19 different "flavors" (18 if you ignore the White Sprint Run version) which are slow movers and might be legitimate candidates for the boneyard.

As for "top 5" guesses, using the first method, and in no particular order, mine would be the Delica, Endura, Police, Native, Rescue.

I bought 14 x Atlantics for use by our Offshore Installation engineers, easy to carry around, bright enough to easily see in low light conditions and with H1 blades making them almost totally resistant to any form of corrosion - I'll tell you at the end of the project whether they are completely resistant (we expect them to be!) HUGELY popular with the guys............

The carbide-tipped rescue knives are going to be tried next.

Me? I particularly like the Natives & the Captain (sounds like a muso group when I say it like that! :)) but am happily collecting as many other types as I can get my hands on that appeal to my sense of taste. "Taste" is purely a personal thing of course.............:D;):D

A breakdown by specific variant would be fascinating (from my knife nerd perspective, anyway.) Your top 5 sounds pretty on the $, care to hazzard a guess for top 10?

Let's see, again in no particular order I'd bet on the Ladybug, Cricket, and Military being in that group, but the last two positions are pretty much a coin toss. Dragonfly? one or more of the Salt series folders? Paramilitary? Yin/Yang kitchen knives?

That sounds about right, although my money is on one of the waved models being somewhere in the mix. Damn, now I'm even more curious than before :p

Is the Cricket really in the top 10? I like it, but it seems like the blade shape would make it a harder item to sell to the average knife person. What about the Chinook or Persian? Or are they too expensive to be in the top 10?

It's a shame that an official answer probably will never be given.

Well, I bought a SS handled Police this year so...Sal can keep making them I suppose.

the SFO says they sell the heck out of the Bigger Pacific Salt PE Yellow handles to Dive shops...Tasman's too. As well as that big order of Atlantics.

I'm guessing there's a couple H1 knives in the top ten.

Hey Sal, I understand. Whatever they were, I'm sure there were alot of happy customers! I hope 2008 turns out even better for you.

Take care,
Mark

What are the disadvantages of releasing the information? That would be interesting to know. The only thing I can think of is knock-off brands stealing the designs they know are popular.

And you don't think that would be reason enough? I can think of one or two other valid ones.
