OK so there are alot of Yucca growing here and the stems make a decent light hiking stick. I was also reading in the book Wildwood Wisdom that it is very good for fire drill / bow drill for the drill and the board.

so when do you think the best time to cut the stem would be? before the flowers bloom out and all the plant nourishment goes to making flowers or at the end of the season in the fall?

they might be stronger in the early summer, about now, but they may be drier in the fall after season. I cut some in the spring once from the year before, they had some bug hole but work good for frie drills, but they would not make the best hiking staff.

so.. vut now and put up to dry for a stick or what,,, sound off. Pat

If you tear the tip out and pull carefully you get a needle with thread already attached. I have used them to sew canvas and jeans before. Works pretty good.
