Just like the title says, I was just looking for more information about when jigged bone first came on the market. What knives were they used on, who did them, did it take long until others caught on. Really any information will be appreciated. I tried a search, but is hard with the common term on this forum.

Thanks
Kris

Try asking Bernard Levine. Jigged bone goes back hundreds of years, maybe thousands.

I checked Levine's Guide to Knives 4th (pg 27) but don't see a definitive date. "Scored Bone" is mentioned as being used in the late 18th century no dates mentioned for "Jigged Bone or Bone Stag" which is a separate category.

My guess is first third of nineteenth century. Smooth bone, scratted or engraved bone, Scrimshaw and horn in particular seem to have been favoured before c 1840. I've got an idea that jigging tools. techniques or machines appeared in Sheffield around this time and quickly gained ground.

Smiling-knife or Wellington would know more than I.

Good question. I've often wondered the same. I'll be following this thread.
