What/Who is the real SAK?

I have used the corkscrew before as a crude marlin spike to undo knots. :)

i find Victorinox holds an edge better than Wenger...
the Victorinox SAKs are excellent whilst the existance of some original Wenger toolblades does give Victorinox a run for the market share.

My first SAK was a Wenger (original PE Alpine Backpacker) so I have a sentimental attachment there. There are some things I prefer about each but overall I prefer Vic, they have a better fit and finish and they just 'feel' better in the hand.

IMO the Wenger can opener is slightly better at opening cans, but I like that the Vic can opener gives you the small screwdriver.

I've used the awl to pick apart knots, I can't imagine trying to undo a knot with the corkscrew.

If I were to buy a SAK now, it would be a choice between the Vic Hiker or Tinker.

I like them both and Wenger is getting better all the time, I really like the Ranger series.

I used to like and prefer the phillips over the corkscrew, but using them both I have learned you can use the corkscrew for many things (true multitool) but the phillips for only one thing and how often do you need that?

If I had to have it and could choose, I'd prefer the phillips in-line and not on the back ;)

I could be talked into going Spartan/Camper instead of Tinker/Hiker, except that I can think of at least one use for a phillips screwdriver and I've never managed to come up with any good ideas for the corkscrew (I don't drink wine).

I'm always looking for good ideas to steal. :D So what are some good ideas of things to do with the corkscrew?

One time, on MacGyver he used it to drill into a wooden bridge that was tipping over so that he could use it as a handle so he didn't fall into a pit of lava. :p

I also prefer Vic, their knives just feel more solid and better made to me, and my Vics seem to hold a better edge than my Wenger. Maybe its just me but the Wengers have always felt more plastic-like to me

+2:thumbup:

i buy both; i am indifferent...they're both SAK's; it really comes down to the tool(s) i want on it and price...

I pefer the Vics. Hey ever wonder why it is a good marketing tool to say you supply the "offical" knives to an army that reps the world always netural country? How good an army can it be? They never get to fight!....lol...They are great "bank guards" for all those off shore accounts I guess.....

Vics are the best.

I dont have any use for a corckscrew.. so I buy models without them. Fieldmasted is my favorite and EDC

I prefer the Vics because of the collection of tools and the feel, other than that bein' the first SAK I Owned.

The original post was accurate, they split the manufacturing so they are both SAKs.

Of interesting note, Victorinox has said that they produce the Swiss Army's order in one day of their normal production volume. Pretty neat eh?

like a few mentioned, to hold the little screwdriver
as an awl
good for untying knots
and for corks!

that's just what I've used it for ;)

The Vics used to be better quality for sure. Since they bought Wenger, I find that both brands are well worth the coin.

The only thing I like about wenger is the scissors. they are serrated, "self sharpening", and The spring is integral and IMO better than the thin spring on victorinox.
