What will (hopefully) be the first knife I don't keep

I'm finally making some progress on a knife I'm planning on giving away as a gift. Originally I was going to do a wharnie, scrapped that, went with this design, screwed up the grind but.....3rd time is a charm....maybe??

Wondering what you guys think of the design? It's ment to be a smaller edc kind of knife so it's got a shorter blade on it. I was thinking about making the handle not as wide with regards to the edge to spine width but not sure. Made from ATS-34.

Anyway here are the early pics. Bevels are in place and most of the vertical scratches are gone from the plunge area from grinding. A bit more cleaning up to get them gone still I think, then I'll start drilling holes in the handle.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions welcome.

EDCs come in all shapes and sizes. I personally like a "full" size handle. That should work well. Frank

Looks like a great design. That blade shape will do just about anything you need during the day. Would also make a great light hiker blade as well.
Look forward to seeing the completion.

very nice. What kind of handle material?

It'll be a wood handle, I haven't decided on which kind though. I have a bunch I've been buying up from Burl Source on here since I joined the forum. I had some of it stabilized from WSSI and will probably pick from some of that stash. I still have to get some of them cleaned up a bit more, I've forgotten what some of it looks like.

So far so good. I drilled all the holes tonight, I saw a set of cobalt drill bits at Home Depot that I picked up a few weeks ago and they were a dream to use. So basically the handle area is finished. All I have to do now is get the blade sanded up and ready for HT... With a little luck I may actually get this one done on time.

Fletch I have a question about the magnet. I have the same one. Does it slid when grining with tape on it like that? Looking good BTW!

I don't know I've never used it for grinding. I stick it to the knife for when I'm doing the flats on my surface plate. When I set one of the 45's on the knife it's a fairly natural "grip". I just put either my ring or middle finger through the hole and my other hand on top of the magnet and I can really lean into my sanding. Especially when I'm sanding the direction of butt to tip.

And thanks! :)

No I just took an angle grinder to that section to hollow out the area a bit. I've heard several makers talk about doing that because it helps with the adhesion when you put the scales on. Probably not overly necessary because I'm using corby's on it but what the hell. Might as well go all out right? :D

Very nice Matt. It looks like it will be quite functional.

Post a pic when you have it finished.

Regards, Fred

Ah, I read about that as well, but also the opposite opinion that an even, thin layer of epoxy is superior--so who knows!? As you say, with Corbys I guess it really does not matter except possibly for sealing purposes. Can't wait so see it finished.
