hey!

i have been searching for some wood for a rehandeling project for my spyderco-hossom colaboration. it currently has micrata, but would like some wood on it.
the problem here are "many": first off, i have found loads of pages whom supply wood, but by some reason they all have ready cut out slabs of wood, that are 5-6 cm (yeh, im european) too short for the length of my handle.
second thing is, most of them dont ship to my contry, normly mostly america.
(anyone know of a good pace where i can order "custom" size wood, that ships too norway, or maby has some spare)
is there some good way that i can make some my self?, any woods i could/should use/not use? and is it just to find some wood, dry it and use it, or is there a more elaborate way to do it?

lately my project has changed somewhat, in the way that i need even more wood, putting a handle on my soon to come gossman psk, making the forager and psk a wildlife match.

thanks for any answers!

You can't find nice birch in Norway ?? There must be sources .How about www.brisa.fi ? I just put some birch in my woodstove !!! That's a fine wood for knives and many other things .

sure, there is loads of good wood right outside of my house, the problem is im not realy shure what to do with it, to get it handle ready. is it just to get some fresh wood, cut it along the grain into good blocks, and then let it dry?
i have tried brisa.fi, but the problem is that i need pieces that are 17 cm long (6,69 inches) and the longest they sell as a standard is 12cm (4,72 inches). i have contacted them, asking if the supply custom lengths, but no reply yet.

With most european woods, you wont be having any problems to season. Just cut the wood into blanks and seal the survaces which are 90 degrees to the grain (the ends) with a paint or glue. This will prevent cracking.

Well there must be lots of good Birch wood in Norway. Ask local DIW shops etc.
Get some old furniture and cut it up.
I got most of my wood off Ebay. Most sellers will ship to Europe.
Search the internet for lokal woodworkers and see where they get there woods.
Or these people: http://www.steigerwald-messer.de/

There are lots of options

You should also consider stabilizing the wood.

is this hard to do, and does it require loads of machinery? i don't have the biggest workshop, or loads of "heavy" machinery. just the normal knifeknut tools ++..

have seen some people do it on various posts on bf, but they used some kind of vacum pump, is it required?
