What would be a good fixed blade for a Bug Out Bag

I only gave my opinion of the 3 knives mentioned by the OP, but I do agree that a Mora would be a great addition to ANY bag, kit, etc. They're so inexpensive & "everyday" looking that several of them wouldn't be a bad idea.

I actually saw this mentioned in another thread but I've been giving it alot of thought and I am considering swithching out the blade in my BOB. That is one of the spyderco Aqua salt fixed blades. 4.5 inch blade and totally rustproof. seems ideal for a blade that's supposed to just be for just in case. No worries. something to think about anyway. Later Grizz

what others I should be considering.

For me, my packed bag for when the defecation hits the rotary atmosphere oscillator stays packed...I only repack once a year with fresh ammo, meds, a few consumables, and similar items. This means I only put in it what I don't plan on using for a year. In mine there is a Mora and a Demo knife. The only exception is my woodsman's Pal which is fixed to the outside of the bag. My web gear has my larger fixed blade on it as well as a SAK in a pouch. Last thing you want to have happen is to take your knife out of the BOB and forget to put it back...would really suck if it wasn't where you expected it to be when you needed it.

Mora's are so cheap I have several stashed in various places, BOB, cars, kitchen, one with each rifle bag, etc. In addition to the ones you mentioned you might also look at these...

KaBar D2 Combat
SOG SEAL Pup
SOG SEAL Revolver which gives you a fixed blade and a saw in one unit
Al Mar Backup
Dozier Classic

Dont have a bug out kit but I like the idea. Should get one built.
Id go with the Rat or a Mora. I'd put a Mora in reguardless as a solid backup.

That's one of the reasons I chose the Fallkniven F1 - not "totally" rustproof, but clearly more so than a carbon steel blade. Even a coated one.

I love carbon steel knives and have many, but for my BOB I choose the (laminated VG-10) stainless. Especially if I end up in a flood, hurricane, etc.

I might go with the Fallkniven S1 but for the fact that it's over the legal length for carry where I live, but the F1 is OK in that regard.

Of the OP's choices, the S1 is the one I'd favor. It's a hell of a tough knife.

Of those mentioned by the original poster, the Rat-4 is a good choice. I prefer the Rat-3. Relatively thick blade for chopping small items, steel that can be sharpened with ease in the field, lanyard hole for work near in and around water, snow, etc.; a great knife.

If you want soomething along the same lines, check out the Kabar impact series. Now disco'd but still can be found.

Plus, you may want to check out a Benchmade Fixed Grip (too thin for my tastes but much more affordable than the Ritter Fixed).

Hope this helps.

Happy New Year!!!
You may want to take a look at the Extrema Ratio Shrapnel... I love mine and it is one TOUGH SOB!!!

Then again maybe a Buck Nighthawk would fill the bill...

Actually the Benchmade Fixed Grip would be great for a BOB. It's a full sized fixed blade, but very lightweight, and 154cm is plenty corrosion resistant.

Speaking of corrosion resistance, though, I noticed the OP was worried about the Rat being coated 1095.

I have a KaBar Impact I'm using as a beater fixed blade. It gets put away wet often, and stored for weeks at a time, and the worst I've seen happen is the edge turning a little brown. And that's fixed easily with a couple of swipes on a sharpener.

Uncoated it might warrant concern, but on a coated blade like the RAT, 1095 is one of the best steel types you could have in that sort of situation, IMO. Very easy to sharpen, takes a keen edge, and tough as nails.

I recently bought a new Buck #151 Kaala neck knife - 3" S30V steel one piece blade/skeletonized handle. A friend from church is headed to a less friendly sandy area of the globe as a contract worker, so I donated it to him. I may have to get another one for my b.o.b. - if the money tree ever blooms again. At $56-$70 mail order/evil-bay, it's not 'killer expensive'... but, after Christmas - and property taxes yesterday - I am planning on panhandling on a freeway exit ramp this AM, if I can find one not already over-populated!

Happy New Year!

Stainz

I carry that knife in my BOB. It's an awesome value IMHO.

I carry a flat bar in my bug out kit, because it is for worst case scenario...

...That's a good suggestion. I carry a foot-long prybar in my rescue bag that lives in the trunk (of my now broke-down :() car.

Id go with the rat 4

pretty soon they will have the RAT 5 out and that is going to be nice.

i carry a busse hell razor in my BOB. Cant imagine any knife id rather have in a worst case scenario.

I'm no expert on what's best for a BOB, but I carry a Ranger RD7 in the one in my car, and a KaBar/Becker BK9 in one I keep in the closet. The BK9 replaces a Ranger RD6 which I'm giving to my brother for his birthday.

Despite what a certain person's "tests" may lead you to believe , I have used my RD7 to pry apart 2 x 6s that were nailed on both ends with 3 nails. In doing so I used my full 195 lb weight to pry. So in my mind my Rangers qualify as prybars. Thanks Justin!

WHERE DID YOU GET THE SHORT NIGHTHAWK WITH PLAIN EDGE????!!!

All of them I've seen are combo (and I hate it). I have the long model in plain but I've always wanted the short one also.

Thanks... and nice S&W BTW... dirty Harry! :D

Mora. Especially in a BoB that is not being used. Why tie up good cash in a blade that costs a lot. I keep a 510 in my EDC bags and they do a great job.
