What would be better for camping and fishing hard use(spyderco military or Recon1)

For "cutting tasks", the military will trump all of them. The Mili will exceed your expectations functioning as a knife should. The thin flat ground blade will cut, skin, fillet & slice to your hearts content.

If you want to use your folder for things it is not designed to do, get the Cold Steel. Cheaper knife & a thicker blade = less upsetting if you damage it (which you are almost guaranteed to do)

Actually, the Military is 4mm vs the Recon 1 which is 3.5mm. Please have your facts straight when advising BF members. Thanks.

Im getting American lawman , and cant wait to see how it performs....Wish cold steel made recon 1 with flat ground blades like on new voyagers!

I actually really like the high hollow grinds CS puts on the recon 1

I will bring my Fallkniven f1 , along with Military and recon1.Will use axe for wood processing so there is no need for bigger knives!I want to really use my military and recon1 hard to test it.F1 is already proven lol.....very strong!

I just dont want to bother with sharpening in the field , as I dont have any portable stones , or small strops.Ill bring couple sheats of sandpaper anyways....if need arises;).

I'd start with a fixed blade for a hard use camping and fishing blade. But that said, between the two the OP is considering, I'd go with the Recon (and I have one). I actually have more spyderco knives than any other brand, so no problem with them either, but I think for this particular application, the Recon is setup a little better for hard use. Very strong Triad lock, I'd probably trust it just a bit more than the Millie liner. Plus the Recon is a great slicer. Don't forget to check out the new spear point, nice blade profile with a strong tip.

I took a Military camping a couple of weeks ago (along with a fixed blade) and while I was there decided I would scoop up a CS Recon 1 spear point after I got back. Military was fine but I kept opting for the fixed blade even when carving sticks due to my uncertainty of its robustness at the tip. Don't get me wrong, the Military is my favorite general use and daily carry knife at this time but the Recon 1 does feel tougher and the lock feels more rugged for a camp beater. Will try and remember to report back after camping again in a couple of weeks. Good luck in your decision.

Um. Seriously??? Carving sticks?? These are made of steel, not glass, people.

I guess I should stop using the extremely fine tip on my SBJ to carve into hardwood. I mean the blade is about 1/3 as thick as the military, with a finer point....

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Are you saying that steel is harder than glass?

The OP asked a question and I responded based on my experience with one of the knives. I gave one example from a few days use. I said the Recon 1 is a better camp beater, in my opinion. Is there a problem with that? Why would you then confront me, a stranger, on the internet?

Get a life, clown.

If you just want a 'beat 'em up' camp knife, I would go with the Recon 1. However, for cooking, gutting fish or detail work of any kind, the Military is King, IMO.

Ka-Bar Large Dozier.
Thick 4 milimeter wide x 3 5/8" long blade, super razor sharp, easy to resharpen, thin and super light weight handle.....and only 26 bucks! I can not believe I like this knife so much!...(Taiwan 4071 or AUS8a-ss..whatever, good 'nuff). Feels like a fixed blade, worth buying one, or two, or three...
Give one a try, you'll be pleasently surprised!

I would suggest that this is a personal decision.

I have used the Military for these uses for several years without incident. Could a guy break the tip on a Military? Sure! Could a guy find a way to use that very fine/pointy tip to his advantage and not have problems with it? I have!

I can not comment on the CS products as I do not have them, but I would imagine that a skilled user could find a way to make them work for these tasks as well.

It is a non-answer, but I would suggest that most other answers are going to be heavy on opinions/preferences of people who are not you. My suggestion is pick the one you THINK you will like and try it. Unfortunately, that is the only real way to know if something is going to be a good fit to your preferences.
