Whatever knife it would be, it would have to be the knife that either kills me or cuts up my credit cards. I don't really have a be-all end-all knife, though I guess to play along I'll go with a 3.5" XM-18. I could probably retire after that.
Well...for me it was 3 knives...taking a break from knife buying for a while right now...so I got a plain raindrop damascus Sebenza 21, a tanto Umnumzaan and a Benchmade 162 for a fixed blade...
Along with what i already have, lets see how long I last...
Busse Battle Mistress. That would be the one I'd blow my wad on. All the big knife needs covered in one swoop. I already have a Basic 9 tho, so maybe an XM with bowie blade.....
If I stopped buying knives tomorrow, I have enough. But if I were buying one more and only one more, it would probably be a Bob Dozier custom.... maybe one of his folders as I have always wanted one of his folders.
I very much like my new Opinel No. 8 (when I'm NOT cutting open my Thumb open lol). That being said.....you MUST get yourself a nice "fixed blade". I highly recommend something EDC, i.e. not too big/heavy.
Also, should you get "hooked" on the old knives (Flea Markets and such) it's a nice way to build a collection of cool knives on the cheap. I found an old (circa 1830'ish) Rogers & Sons (Modified) Carving Knife in outstanding condition that was cut down/made into a Bowie type for chump change and it's awesome! It has a nice Carbon Blade (6") and a real Stag Handle. OAL is about ten inches. I dig the original Makers Marks with the "V-CROWN LOGO-R" and the *(Star) and + (Cross) stamp. I'm going to have a nice Leather Sheath made for it in the future. It look a LOT like the knife pictured here : http://media.liveauctiongroup.net/i/8884/10074071_2.jpg?v=8CD69B067964590

I find it fun to collect such knives. Mine cost me (lol) two dollars!
