What would chop better? Busse Kukri vs ASHBM?

however, after seeing my new toys, I gotta say that I still prefer the overall multi-purposefulness of the straight knife such as this

I agree. The kuhkri might end up being a chopping monster but the Mistress is, overall, a more utilitarian design.

Just curious. What can a straight blade of same size do better than a Kuk?

small cutting tasks are all done better with a straight edge. There is much more usable edge on a straight blade. Prying which is not an official blade duty but is done all the itme is very hard to do with a khuk. Anything point related will be easier with a straight blade. HAve you ever tried to use a bent screw driver? Same kinda thing. The tip of the knife on a straight knife gives more power than on a bent blade. again, simple physics and mechanics of motion. Kitchen duty. Cutting vegetables and meat with a khuk, lol, is funny. I know I have tried. Of course you can make anything do a job. But a khuk takes a back seat to a straight edge knife in all other tasks that are not hacking hard wood.

Agreed, the Kukri is a pure chopper, not a utilitarian knife

True. Most things can be made work but some maybe not as easily and others maybe even more easily.

The recurve makes an excellent draw knife which follows the curvature of a branch for example if you need less curve just hold it more flat and so on.

Usually I grab Kitchen knives by the spine anyways. The reason I don't use Kuks in the Kitchen is more the size and weight which a huge straight blade would have as well.
The forward curve itself is no obstacle to me.

Less usable edge? I don't know when a long flat blade would be more useful. Most of the time I work with the curve toward the tip. But that's all me and I can see how to some it might not work as good.

Only regarding the tip I feel that everybody could create more thrust with a curved blade because it allows for a better position of the wrist.
For the same reason if there isn't any guard, curved feels safer, since it doesn't push the knife straight through our fingers.
Just picture a pushup with two blades in your hands. You'd have to twist your hands a lot with straight blades if it's even possible at all. With forward curved blades not so much. Pistol grips would be another example. They allow you to use more strength when shooting or doing a pushup than holding a straight rod of similar weight and length. Even many pure stabbing swords had curved handles in the past and even more extreme when you look at today's Olympic fencing equipment.

Straight line is always best in physics, well ignoring arches and stuff, and maybe a curved handle and or blade allows to create a straighter or better connected line to the target when taking human ergonomics into account? Or am I going out on a limb too much with this?

Edit:
Just for added discussion. Why aren't then daggers curved forward, if it's so good for stabbing? Well, they should be if they are single edged and many who have only one edge or at least one primary are actually curved. However if one got two edges and wants to give them equal weight in their use than of course straight would be good since you can't forward curve both edges in the same blade.

not at all. I think you have just proven that what works for one person does not work for another. all good points. I used khuks for years. I still have my original 15" AK. Will never let it go. For me, I feel that my straight edge blade can do everything but chop, better. I used my AK and my SHBM side by side for 5 years. At the end of the day I could easily make due with my AK, but if I have to choose it would be the straight.

Oh totally. Actually most people would probably intuitively go for the straight blade. And I also could make everything work with the normal looking knives. The difference might very well be negligible, except for prying or chopping.
Us knife nuts.
;-)

lol. I will tell you if Busse makes a basic khukuri I am buying 5

How would a Basic Kuk be different from the current HUCK? I'm not so good at the Busse terminology just yet.
Only got two blades at home and the HUCK ordered.

The term 'Basic' refers to the molded Resiprene C handle models, as seen on the Basic 3,5,7,8,9,10,11, and 13 models. The HUCK has a full tang handle with solid composite handle scales attached.

Cool! Thanks resinguy.
They do look interesting and I can see why many would prefer them on a Kukri. :-)

Guy, thanks for responding for me, I was out. Yes, a Basic handled khuk would be nice.

That's why i only bought 4 HUCK's, i'm waiting for the Basic ;)

Not really, i can't afford any more. A 13asic 13 however... i'd just get my high heels, fishnets, lipstick and hit the street for a couple days.

COBOLT, I love your signature line.:D And agree with you. You seem to be a bit of a "purist" or "traditionalist" as am I. But like you, I also bought a HUCK. Love my TGLBs and ASH-2 recently became my new favorite once I received the Patriot Leather pants for it, but just HAD to have a HUCK as a chopper. The picture Jerry posted just jumped out and "spoke" to me! If I had passed, I would have regretted it for a long time! I know myself well enough to know that, so I didn't "resist" for very long.:D As for chopping, I've got a wood pile out back just waiting for the HUCK to arrive! Will check it out against the other knives I have once it arrives. I have a suspicion it will out chop anything else I own, but it won't become the "one" knife I carry into the woods. (I'd never carry just one knife into the woods anyway, though. But generally one large and then a couple of smaller ones.)

No doubt that will be a chopping beast. If I was doing as much chopping as I use to I would have gotten one as well. There is no denying the power of a khuk for chopping. Besides, they look great.

I agree, I LOVE them but tell ya the truth..I use my Kuks more for whacking it into fire logs to move them around or carry them to the fire.. and for splitting small-med fire wood. everything else its a straight blade for me!
sick BM by the way..
