what would happen

First of all, I read through here about twice a day but never say anything BUT now I have a question.
I need to make 5 short swords and I do have plenty 01 steel, now the swords mite be used 4 or5 times on bushes then hung on the wall and that is it. My question is what if I quenched the 01 in parks 50? The deepest quench tank that I have @ 36" and it is full of p 50. The m'carr 11 is in an 18" tk. I would like the blades to be useable just in case the zombies attack [or something ]
Thanks a bunch--Jerry

#50 is considerably faster than O-1 needs.

Since you have lots of O-1, I would make a test blade and see how the quench goes.
Make the edges fairly thick and avoid any 90 degree transitions. Use a slightly lower austenitization temp, and warm the oil to 130F. Those things should slow the quench speed a tad and help resist warp and cracking.

Thanks Stacy--What temp would you say 1425-30?
I suppose I should just find a 5 gal bucket to hold the p-50 and fill the tk with canola oil. would be better anyway. Don't want to make anything that is not up to par. Jerry

I was going to suggest that you just dump the oil in a bucket and switch the other oil into that tank.

Yes, 1430F should be good if using the #50. If doing the quench in 130F canola, use 1450-1475F. Give the O-1 swords a good ten minute soak at target.

Well.... if the target is zombies, remember they are soft and squishy, having begun the decomposition process. Of course, there is the bone you need to crush, but that requires more toughness than edge retention.

;)

Stacy, there is not enough of the 11 sec oil to be deep enough to quench. I gave another knife maker 2 gal.
and yes I know about the soak time, 2 or3 yrs ago, all I used was 01 [1475 soak 20 min].
I just didn't want to change oil, but I suppose I need to do it right. thanks Jerry

If you ever back down to s. Ms , shoot me an email , we'll kick around a while

Greg, are you saying that those zombies are like spalded or something? I believe a good piece of sharp 01 will --you know--slice & dice don't you?

this is the most I have typed in 10 yrs-- don't even have a keyboard. Doing this with on screen keyboard. Thank you guys a bunch. Jerry

ROFL...

A good sharp point... gotta get into that cranial cavity to shut em down. A good triple tap is always in order... :)
