What would it take to stop knock offs from being sold?

Nothing. People who know better or care already do not buy them. The people that think $10 is about average for a knife are not going to care about intellectual property nor copyrights.

Maybe when all the idiots that buy them bleed out from gouging themselves with dull 420 steel?

It'll never happen.I know guys who think nothing of paying $800 plus for a handgun and carry $5 pos knock off knives. They are HAPPY with their knives.:barf: In fact they think they are quite good, well maybe not as good as my $100 and up ones, but almost(in their minds)and at a bargin price.

Strict import tariffs on anything made overseas. Even then, gooooooood luck.

Find out who makes it, and stop buying from that company.

Find out who contracted it to be made, and stop buying from that company.

Find out who imports it, and don't buy products that company imports.

Find out who distribute it, and stop supporting retailers that buys from that distributor.

But most importantly, find people that don't any better and educate them.

Sometimes, you can't blame the buyer. These knives are being sold everywhere at a price affordable for all. I never had money growing up so a Buck 110 and a SAK Camper seemed far from reach so a knockoff from the flea market was what had. You can't blame someone who needs a knife and fills that void with a $10 import that just so happens to be a knockoff of a BM, CRK, Strider etc. I'd be hard pressed for a reason to call someone an idiot if that knockoff he was carrying just so happens to be the tool that cuts me or a loved one free from a seatbelt that's got me trapped.

If you travel at all to foreign countries, you'll see these knives everywhere beng carried by LEOs, Military, EMTs. Would they be better suited with a top of the line, D/A, CPM-VG-ATS Steel, Axis/liner etc? Probably, but when one of those is about the equivalent of a months pay, I doubt they'd buy one.

I also have two close friends, brothers, both stationed overseas, both barely making enough to support thier families. After bills are paid, they have a pretty meager amount to put into savings let alone a $50+ tactical folder. Every "good" knife they have are my "hand-me-downs" which I am proud to sacrifice, but when I met them, I hardly considered them, "idiots", even with the knockoff Emerson CQC7's clipped to thier sides.

It's only been in the past three years or so that manufacturers have begun to produce quality alternatives. Let's see what happens in a few years when there are more high quality knives at the $20-$30 range.

And guys, don't get so hateful about it. It's just a part of the retail landscape. Everything gets knocked off if it's quality. If the original wasn't great, nobody would copy it. Think of the design of the 1911, CZ or High Power pistols, ripped off all the time. . .

BTW 420J2 really is cheap steel but I can put a wicked edge on it that would surprise most folks.

Nuke China :D

You'd also have to "nuke" Taiwan, Korea, Pakistan, India, Thailand, several in the EU, many central and south American countries and my home country, the Philippines. If it's that much of an issue, maybe we should all take a step back away from our knives and see if there's a bigger issue at hand than copyright laws. EEKS!

Over here, you can walk into a knife store and the seller does not know what is an Emerson, a Benchmade, a Spyderco or a CRKT knife, among many other brands, much less that he sells the knock offs of all these brands...:o
Education is the key, but I wouldn't know even where to start....

Well, now that I've read everyone's responses, just let them be. They're probably made by some poor worker who makes these things just to survive and they aren't hurting the knife community THAT much. (Every real knife knut knows what's best for them)

Now that you have labeled at least 90% of the male population as idiots--no doubt excluding yourself---how do you convince them that a $700 folder will clean their fingernails better than a $10 knockoff?

"Blade Steel 420 (57 RC)" Yeah right!

All I can do is my little part and not support the manufacturers or dealers of these products.

How 'bout this, Let's get all the custom knifemakers and quality knife companies to stop making cool designs to copy, That will show 'em!

If there were no knockoffs what would compel knifemakers and knife manufacturers to create new designs? Don't hand me the pride of making a better product argument. If that were true none of these people and companies would be making knives with beadblasted blades, Nobody would be making knives out of 420hc.

The "people don't respect intellectual property rights" argument doesn't wash either. None of the designs being copied are trademarked or patented. There is a reason for that, They all use ideas from other people. They all build on the designs of other people. There is a very well known knifemaker named Collin Cox, He copied Jimmy Lile's designs from the Rambo movies, made subtle changes and even had the temerity to call his knife "Fierce Blood" Do you suppose Collin kicked back any $$$ to Jimmy Lile?
And where did Lile get the idea?

How many makers copy Bob Loveless's drop point hunter? Go to a custom knife show and you will see one on 8 out of every 10 tables.
Are 80% of all custom makers making knockoff's? Where did Bob get the idea for the knife that made him the godfather of modern custom knifemaking?

How many companies make a knife that looks like the Buck 110? Puma, Boker, Schrade, Kershaw, There are probably a lot more.

The cheap knockoff makers aren't doing anything the rest of the cutlery industry has been doing for years.

I HAVE THE ANSWER!!!!
Never will stop, but it isn't so bad. I work in a knife shop, and we sell Fury's and Jaguars's etc. also. I mean the sales Reps who work there don't promote them, we rather promo Benchmades spydies and Williams, etc. But alot of idiots come in who think they are the tuffest guys on earth. Mainly the ones who think they are all ganstas and can rap. We at the store actually like selling them these knives ( if they buy any ). Rather sell them that hoping they hurt them selves or for being stupid then a good one. Also Stupid people with good knives? think aobut that. These are people who Play with knives.. Play as in Play!! these are people who think they are god and when someone steps in their way they will take them down. I feel safer walking around in Boston knowing they care Crap then somethign good :) Plus because they caarry crappy knives that means they wont pick up a bat or a brick and do some real damage.

Also owning a knife store is hard stuff.... If you sell some one a good knive for like 100-600 thats great... but when do you think that customer will come back? 2-5 years? maybe more? We hope the customer loses the knife if anything.
( say an average knife is 150 we sell 5000 for 2-3 years. Thats alot for an actual Retail store and not online. 5000 people who buy good knives hehe wow. Anyways 150x5,000=750,000. thats good. really good but those people won't come back for another 2-5 years unless they lose it. now Minus
$$ For the knives (wholesale)
$$ for leasing
$$ for employees
$$ for shippment (stock)
$$ on stolen goods
and plenty more... :( oh well thats the answer lol

Every time someone ask if I want to see thier cool BoBo brand knife. I say "Sure and do you want to see me cut yours in half with my Spyderco?" I always love the look on thier face when I tell them that>
