What would it take to stop knock offs from being sold?

VampyreWolf - That video was... well, special. I didn't know whether to wince or laugh. After forcing myself to watch it more than once, I ended up deciding it was both. Now that's some sick irony...

Hey, cheap knockoffs are everywhere (read, don't buy a Rolex on EBay)... There will always be a market for 'look alikes'. In the end, you get what you pay for... Caveat emptor.

One more time...

As I've said before, if it hadn't been for two or three $15 POS knives from the flea market that got my interest piqued in discovering what a "good" knife is all about, I wouldn't have gone on to become a certified knife knut. And then those custom makers to whom I have sent my checks for hundreds and thousands of dollars would have lost out.

No, of course I no longer buy knives from flea markets, but neither do I have that blind hatred for them that always floats to the surface in a thread such as this.

:)

We have to realize that most people don't know the first thing about quality knives, either blade steel/heat treat or construction. There have been numerous occasions when a friend or family member, knowing that I am into knives, proudly shows me their latest acquisition. Invariably it is a piece of junk, but they don't know the difference. Even after I explain it to them, most still don't care, and, besides, "It only cost $5! What a deal!" They will struggle to cut anything with dull knives that have very poor edge geometry, and I will let them try one of mine; they will make a comment about how well it cuts, but they still have no interest in paying what I pay for knives. It is just not a priority to them.

To be completely fair, they may laugh at my car ('78 Nova with paint that used to be blue) and wonder why I won't get something that performs more to their expectations, but, hey, it works for me. It's all about priorities.

Thats frickin funny. You see, Darwin Awards.

I've even seen so called high quality knock offs. Like the Microtech Halo in 154CM. There are even stuff in ATS34. Hey, for $25 you can let the "normal" people have some fun too. Not everyone needs to have a $800 knife sitting on the shelves.

What about tools? The knock offs there are endless but some can quite handy.
For example. A coaxial cable crimper from Kline Tools cost $90. A flea market or dollar store copy cost well, a dollar. Then there's the quality copy that cost $15-$20. I've had that $20 Radio Shack copy for about ten years and there nothing wrong with it. I wouldn't put it on my shelves but its the exact copy of the Kline and works just as good. I even saved $70 to buy a real knife later.

Regular people buying knock offs just means more good knives for us to put on our shelves and on the coffee table and under the matress and on the nite stand and in the cubbard and in the cabinets and to fill our pockets and......

I'm sorry, I'm confused on how POS knives has anything to do with the topic at hand. No one said to stop making them. Heck, they can make as many of them for $1. All we asked is that these POS makers stop copying someone's successful design and try and be original for once.

I think Dayuhan answered that aspect quite well.

<<<And guys, don't get so hateful about it. It's just a part of the retail landscape. Everything gets knocked off if it's quality. If the original wasn't great, nobody would copy it. Think of the design of the 1911, CZ or High Power pistols, ripped off all the time>>>

I was simply commenting on the blind 'hatred' this topic often generates. And yes, as a writer and producer, I do know a bit about the seriousness of copyright infringement and misappropriation of intellectual property.

My apologies for straying off-topic and ruining your enjoyment of this thread. :)
