What would make you give up knife collecting?

Many, many moons ago, I used to collect comics. I was a diehard comics fan. But the years have taken off the shine in this hobby.

I still do dip my eyes and mind into the world of comics now and then, but no longer with the same intense passion as before.

So the other day, I started thinking of knives in the same light. Of course, under the present circumstances, there's no way I am giving up this wonderful pastime.

However, I was thinking what are the circumstances that will make me give up the hobby. Drastic lack of funds, perhaps.

Sudden unexpected turn of events in my private life, maybe. Or, even a global disaster of global proportions. But that's reaching way out there.

So far, my better half has been quite supportive of my hobby. She says it beats smoking any day. It healthier anyway.

Ever thought of circumstances that will make you cease this knife passion of yours?

I have given up several collecting interests over the years; generally, when I grow board with the hobby.

Ten years ago I moved away from gun collecting. The import ban (US), plus tighter restrictions, along with the thinning out of retailers and manufacturers reduced innovation. At the time I was planning to obtain my class 3 license which would have enabled me to buy fully automatic military small arms. Something that would have been a lot of fun since I enjoy history and wanted to put up a display of authentic artifacts. But, the risks associated with that plan became unacceptable (confiscation).
With little innovative growth and a reduced access to older arms I simply lost interest.

Knives were a far more dynamic area, so that is where I went. I don't know if anything will eventually move me away from knives. It is hard to conceived of anything that will restrain so broad and interesting a subject.

This is one area that has been growing in greatly in all directions. We have a craft knife movement that has been growing and improving steadilly since the 1960s and a factory production network that has accepted the challenge of innovation. Market distribution is now aided by the internet and improving; As is, our research base that is energied and growing rapidly. We even have our Baldesforum, what more can we ask for?

Best reply so far - I agree!

>>> COMMON SENSE <<<

I am not that fanatical of any of my hobbies. Like all the others, I get bored and move on.
Knives are on the way out.

I've never really considered myself a collector. I just buy knives because I love them and I have almost all the knives I ever bought, going back about 35 years. When I buy a knife, it's usually because I have a use that I will put it too, not because I need to add to my collection. As time goes by, my needs seem to be more and more satisfied and with considerable redundancy. But there are still niches left to fill, there are still certain types of using knives out there that I don't have but want. For instance, I still want a few different types of crooked knives for carving. I also look for better technology or design. For instance, I prefer micarta scales and look for micarta-handled knives to replace my older users. Mutltitools are always improving so I look forward to the latest and greatest. My current favorite is a Leatherman Pulse. My idea of a big knife was always a machete but then I started buying "choppers" for a different kind of experience. And I use the big knife in the field more because "big" knives are more compact and I'm more likely to carry one into the field than a bulkier machete.

When will it all end? Probably never. I've been through periods when I had squat for money but still managed to buy an SAK or two or a whittler so I doubt that I will stop for lack of funds but I surely will slow down a bit if funding dries up.

death...possibly if I was paralyzed and couldn't move or speak(unless I got one of those cool voice thingies like Stephen Hawking). Obviously total indebtedness hasn't worked yet.

Currently nothing, but I know that there will be a day I look at my knives and this special pleasurable feeling is gone. I know this, because it happens before with other leisure activities.
Otherwise, no rule without exeption!

Nada. Knives are in my blood, so to speak. One of my earliest memories was when I was finally allowed to use a steak knife at the dinner table, instead of a butter knife. I'll never give up knives....

I doubt I'll ever get bored with knives. I've been pretty well hooked since I was 8, and it's only gotten worse since. Maybe worse isn't the right word, maybe just more intense.

If I were to get into light sabres, would I still be a knife nut, or would I then be an electronics nut? There's something to dwell on.......
