What would make you leave home?

I've been reading about all the SHTF scenarios and thinking what would have to happen to make me leave the comfort of my home, I do live about 20miles from a army depot where they dispose of chemical weapons and if they had an accident I would have to evacuate, but what other instance's would make you have to pack it up and hit the road, and where would you go?

Well...there are a few different possibilities...but one of the local nuclear reactors going into melt down could easily do it.

Where depends on which one.

For me it would have to be a North wind, light rain, a full tank of gas in my truck with the duck boat hooked up, and duck season being open I'm leaving the comfort of my home at odarkthirty tomorrow morning!

Flooding(not likely). If our house was flooded to the point we needed to evacuate, there's a good chance my aunts house would be flooded, so we'd probably head to my grandparents, or I'd stay with friends.

Earthquake(somewhat likely). If it's bad enough to destroy houses, there probably isn't anywhere to head to. I'd probably be setting up camp and helping with relief efforts as best I could.

Zombies(I can hope right). Don't really know where I'd go, though I'd rather stay home where the guns and ammo are.

radiation, volcano, would move out of harms way. may have to move to austrailia, new zeland, phillipines. would depend on the how widespread the radiation was

Other than that its one of the essentials, shelter.

Firs stop would be my office. Its 30 miles west of home and has water, food and I know the area so supplemental food is accessible. Further out is my cottage about an hour west of home by car with normal traffic. Its on a lake so I could fish.

If push came to shove and I had to go much further, I'd make my way to upstate NY along the St. Lawrence river or rural Ontario, Canada.

Because of my location I'd try to move through the local waterways as much as possible. Bug-out traffic has no appeal for me.

But seriously folks, as one of the most capable members of my family, I would feel an obligation to stick around and help them as long as I could. I wouldn't want to leave my niece or nephews or sister or elderly mother. I guess I'd just have to make a decision at the time.

full scale warfare. maybe.

i live in a pretty secure spot, all things considered.

my back's to the ocean and my town only has two ways out, as we are surrounded by a bay and the sea, plus the SEALs are here, as are Naval Aviation and Marine forces ...with personal means of going out into the ocean for months without returning, if ever coming back....

winds move east of us from the entire continental USA, so fallout is going to be minimal in most expected cases, assuming we don't take one right in the teeth, at which point escape will be irrelevant, i reckon.

mountains and desert not too far east, with intensive knowledge of the topography and water sources for hundreds of miles in any direction, and in some directions, beyond that, including into Mexico.

so i'll probably stay put.

Rioting with widespread fires would force me out because I live in a high-density condo area. Not defensible against fire.

same here brother...:thumbup: no matter what the situation may be, if the family is in danger, were Bugging Out... we have plent of gear ready to grab and go...

We've had a poison gas well blowout near here. I was just outside the evac area/perimeter..that would do it I guess. I was here for the Katrina fiasco so if It comes down to E&E time I suggest puttin on your boots that were made for walkin. The roads will be jammed and evacuees/refugees will be "routed" by some plan put in place by the feds..oh sure the worlds gone to crap and I'm gonna trust the fedgov to bail me save me...yep I can see that happening.
