What would you buy if you had a 45% off coupon?

I sent my "bought used from the forum" domino in to spyderco because it flipped like it had been left in the sand for a year. They sent me back a letter today saying they couldn't/wouldn't fix it and offered me 45% off msrp or sending my knife back as is. I sent it to them in the first place because i couldn't use it as-is, so I'm going to take them up on the 45% off offer.

SO....what would you get if you had this choice? My favorite edc currently is my benchmade 940, I also like my zt770 and liked the idea of the domino. I had a dice for a bit but thought it was too fat and small and sold it. I really like flippers and want something in the same size range as the two i mentioned. I have a Benchmade Rift which is on the large size for my personal carry preference. I'd also like to keep my cost below $200, so with the 45% off msrp I'd be in the $400 range.

FOrgot to add this in, my only spyderco is an old, original endura from early 2000's. Right now I'm thinking either the pm2, southard, or the new Positron.

Suggestions welcome!

I would say Positron. I have a Southard in my pocket right now and I've really liked it.

So they keep your Domino and give you a discount?
No big bargain.
I can find a brand new Slysz Bowie right now for 50% off MSRP in about 2 minutes.

Would have to go with the slysz bowie. im loving cts-xhp right now and that is one sweet blade. But if you don't have a para 2 yet that is a must have. By far my favorite spyderco design for edc.

Very sad, especially because the Domino is one of my favorite knives. And because 45% off MSRP is the everyday street price for just about every Spyderco out there. So basically they are offering you a purchase at FULL price, and they are retaining their full margin (actually probably more) than they would have if sold through a large dealer like BHQ, KC, KSF, etc. The least they could do is offer 45% off the street price, or something off their wholesale pricing. Remember, Spyderco (the company) is making a profitable margin by selling to dealers at 50-60% (or more) off MSRP. In fact, middle-man distributors can make a profitable margin by selling at 50% off do dealers.

Personally I wouldn't call that exceptional customer service. But at least they communicated with you, which is more than most companies would do. So we'll just say that they have customer service. And leave it at that. ;)

I guess I should stop flipping my Domino like I do most of my ZT's. While my example Dom is pretty smooth and fast, with great lockup, it does have a bit of gritty sound when opening. Hope I'm not just SOL when I flip it that last "one too many" times.

Doh! Back to the question...what would I do? You really haven't been left with much of a choice. Buy from them, don't buy from them...either way you lose. So if it were me, and I still wanted another Spyder, I'd simply buy from a large forum supported dealer. You'll still get around 45% off, and the dealer will get a little something out of it. And in the end, Spyder Corporate will most likely be left with just a little less than if you took them up on their "generous" offer. :)

And in terms of model....If you don't already have a PM2, get it.

I'd get your knife back and try fixing it yourself, or get someone else to. Paying full street price for another knife is not a good deal. Basically you would just be throwing it away and buying something else.

Hi op, would you mind clarifying the details of this before more opinions fly? If they are unable to fix it, I wouldn't think you have to leave your knife with them to get a 45% discount.

They certainly are not expecting to keep the knife, it sounds like he already has it back. I wouldn't use that 45% off, like other have said, it's not actually much of a deal compared to street prices. Find someone on the forum to look at your Domino, or get acquainted with it yourself.

When I posted this I only had the letter they sent to go by, I called them and talked tithe guy who was fixing my domino and things are definitely better than it first seemed. He said he fixed the flipping action and its not very and smooth now but it failed a spine test so he wasn't going to send it back at first, but after talking t him a little he gave me a 50% discount t and is also sending my fixed domino back. I decide dead to go with the positron, I really like flippers and I like the slim look of the positron. So for $130 I get a brand new knife and also get my domino back.

I think I paid may $90 or $100 for the domino, I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the seller of that knife. I've universally had good luck buying used from the forum here but this knife was pretty screwed up by the original owner. He apparently tried modifying the blade profile and also polished the blade, and the Spiderco guy said the washers were really screwed up so the original owner must have taken it apart at least a few times

Overall I'm pretty happy with the customer service. Spyderco is helping me get the quality knife I should have gotten originally, plus a nice new knife as well. I do like the pm2 though, I'm going to be selling a bench made grip with custom scales so maybe the pm2 will find its way into my pocket.

I'm glad you had the opportunity to talk it through and work out a reasonable solution. Better outcome than it sounded like it was going. Let us know how you like the Positron. That's one of the new offerings that caught my eye the most. Still waiting for my local guy to get one in. Next would be the GB2.
