What would you buy?

going to throw out medford 187 series as an alternate. for the hard use this could work.

I'd say I'm pretty hard on knives...

Whatever you buy, also get one of those little pry bars to put on your key chain.

Taking into consideration the broken tip, I would suggest something like a scout/camp knife with a screwdriver and awl/punch.
Maybe a SAK Farmer, Huntsman, or Tinker/Super Tinker.

The Kizlyar Ute has a built in pry tool in the handle to help save the (robust) tip from any unnecessary over use in prying.

Strider with a FFG would be my choice. The perfect medium in cutting performance between a sebenza and a xm18.

Hinderer and Strider both make good knives but it really depends on what you want and what works for you. I wasnt into flippers until I got a Hinderer a few months back. I've bought and sold many Striders over the years and now I have a couple SnGs that I plan on keeping. If you can handle one of each before buying definitely do it as they do feel very different in the hand.

If I could only have one, at the moment it's a toss up.

Well, I stumbled upon a like new Strider SnG DGG for $300 in the exchange so I had to pick it up! I'll probably buy the Hinderer next, then the Umnumzaan or maybe the Medford 187F

Congratulations on the strider! That sounds like a great price for a SNG DGG. I like your style, just barely purchased the strider and you already have 3 lined up!

I love Striders but the tip is a known weak point. If you plan to be prying, digging or gouging with your knife you might want to go with an XM-18 spanto.

I love my XM-18 3.5 , best user blade in my collection. I bought a zt 0566 first but it didn't take away the longing for a XM-18. I don't pry open paint cans with it but I use it every day at work and home & it still good as new (only 6 months old or so). Can't go wrong with an XM-18 in my opinion

An expensive knife does necessarily have a longer life of use. Look at the Cold Steel Amercan Lawman or Recon One. Those are working knives.

A strider tanto has an extremely thick tip. Can't imagine breaking one of those. Even on my flat ground striders, they use pretty thick stock, I've never had any trouble.

Good point. I thought about recommending the tanto but I don't care for them myself so I stopped short. I have never had any trouble with my spearpoints either but I certainly don't pry with them. I have seen a lot of pics/stories by folks who have broken the tips on their Striders. Of course SKI will always grind them down for you if need be.

You might want to take a look at some of the replies in this video to get some ideas :D

I'm searching for my new EDC knife, it will be replacing a 10ish year old Benchmade Auto Mini Reflex. I want something that will more than likely last a lifetime. My budget is $500. I know that the Sebenza is a highly recommended knife in this price range but for whatever reason those knives don't appeal to me. I've been looking hard at a Hinderer XM-18 3.5" skinner and Strider SnG, from my research the consensus seems to be that the better knife of these two is the Hinderer. I guess what I'm asking is should I buy the Hinderer and never look back or are there some other options that I should check out before jumping into the Hinderer.

Thanks guys!

I would like to thank everyone for their advice. I got my new knife in today and I'm completely satisfied after a little Rit dye treatment.

The Upcoming Manix 2 Blue G10 CPM S110V...

Probably one of the most long-term reliable locks and paired with S110V it will last.

I would recommend the Manix 2 LW in S110V but most people don't like the cheap feeling and are worried that the FRN will break.

If that doesn't fit your bill then look at the umnumzaan...
