What would you do??? Hippo Ivory // Knifemaker Reality $$..Insane Man with shoe box??

Mike, I promise that if you walk up to me while I am in the bank and mumble about a box full of folders I'll take that weight off your shoulders.

Neat little knife and great story.

On another note I have always liked your knives but was a bit put off by the gangster talk. I have been reading some of your posts of late and the good dude in you just can't help but come out.

You got a new fan

Thanks for posting,

I have been reading your posts for a couple of years and over that time I have developed a high level of respect for you. I like your taste in knives, no nonsense fighting bowies and I enjoy your level headed approach when posting.

I quit school in the ninth grade to become a welder. The South Texas welders wore starched shirts, diamond rings and always drove nice trucks.. I was ready to sign up. Six months later I was working offshore. I had dollar signs sewn on my shirt and cheap diamond rings on nearly every finger. My father got pissed off and said I looked like Sammy Davis Jr. My first welding truck had Huge Chrome plated dollar signs to roll up my welding lead and cables...I kept it waxed all the time..

When I became a successful consultant I bought a $10,000 Panerai to beat up in the oilfield.. I had dollar signs tattooed on my ribs and I even have gold teeth but I can promise you one thing...I am no Gangster...Certainly not as the word is currently described. I had Gangsters in my Family, they came from Scotland..They wore three piece suits and raised happy families that spent Sundays in Church. The very definition of my original family name Snow-Day will lend some insight into some of the Original Gangsters in the Snody Family.

In 2010 Gangster means something different..I have a couple of "Gangsta's" currently in my family,,The most Notorious is known as Nacho...He has spent over half his life in the TDC..He has facial tattoos and teardrops representing the people he killed...He had his left eye beaten out of the socket by a guy from the Irish Mafia...He was beaten with a claw hammer, duct taped and left in a closet for nearly a week..He has over 8 children with three women and supports none...His kids were taken away by protective services because they were infested with fleas and ticks sleeping in a dog kennel. My family... My blood..Thats Nacho...Thats a Gangsta... I have Gangsters on my street selling crack cocaine 24/7 less than one block away. I pass them every morning taking my son to school.. Gangsters today are not like the Real Original Gangsters...Gangsters today rape women, steal from family, kill friends, shoot innocent children, defy authority, inform on their crime partners and prey on the weak...

I have a family of four that relies on my knifemaking as our sole source of income and I am also very competitive. I have to work to seven days a week building knives and promoting the brand to earn enough money to support my family,,When your out there as much as I am two things happen.

1. You make alot of friends

2. You make alot of enemies.

Whats happened is many of my detractors have jumped on the "Gangsta" thing but in reality I would just soon have you hit me in the mouth with a ball peen hammer as be a "Gangsta" and I am dead serious.

It doesnt matter what they call me but I rather be known as a Pimp and just leave the Gangsta thing to the punks with the tek 9's and fake diamonds

I may have a little Sammy Davis Jr in my blood and I may like to Pimp and eat Shrimp but they need a call a spade a spade...

Thanks for taking the time out to share that Mike. I always had a hard time matching the $$$*&^*^%$$$$ stuff with the kind of person you seem to be.

That little story finally made me get where you're coming from. I apreciate you on a whole new level now.

Have a good one taking care of the family and have fun making knives.

That Hippo tooth one is lovely....makes me want to buy some hippo tooth...(or one of your knives but I don't have the $$$ for either a.t.m. Who knows what the future may bring.)

Nice knife and a nice score. I have heard tell that the round hippo incisors that look like mini elephant tusks work pretty much like other ivory, but the huge curved canines have a thick enamel layer that can flat tear up some tools and saw blades.

Thanks Friend.

Your are spot on regarding the density of Hippo Ivory.

I rough ground this material outdoors on our Hot Rod Grinder with a brand new 60 grit 977 Ceramic Belt..

This grinder screams and the the belt did not aggressively cut the ivory.

I actually stopped to double check that I had indeed installed a virgin belt.

I split some huge Hippo teeth freehand on my bandsaw and it was lunacy.

Nothing like filling the shop with hippo tooth smoke when the enamel kills your new saw blade...

The smoke has a very unique and mesmerizing aroma..

I am thinking of marketing a new fragrance called "Essence of Hippo", available in incense form or cologne.

Thanks for posting on my thread...

Much Respect...

Nice knife..but I'd drop the story of where and how the Ivory was found.
