What would you do?

I'm in the middle of moving my shop. So now is the time for me to figure out what to do. I have a 3 speed KMG. I recently acquired an Allen Bradley 1305 VFD and a Baldor 2hp 3 phase motor. Should I convert the kmg or build a disk grinder? I know 2hp is probably too much for a disk. Just wondering what you would do?

I'd build a disc. Then keep an eye out for another cheap 3 phase motor. Then you'll have two tools instead of two motors.

The first issue may be getting a disc to fit the 2HP motor shaft. If that is not a problem, then you can build a disc grinder with the motor/VFD if you want to.

I would personally put the 3Ph motor on the KMG and use the old single speed motor for making a disc grinder. When you come across a 1HP 3Ph motor deal, change the disc to VS, running both off the one VFD.

BTW, while both words are used interchangeably, disK is the term for a computer media storage device and disC is the term for a machinery part.

Another vote for putting the VFD/motor on the KMG. Do away with the pulley/jackshaft assembly and make it a direct drive. You'll NEVER regret it.

I had two kmg's with step pulleys. My third grinder was variable speed. Absolutly the way to go. Can't believe I waited that long.

Guess I'm gonna go with the motor on the kmg and make it direct drive. Might have to get another 3ph motor for a disc then. Stacey, u said about using the old single speed off the kmg, would ya wire it up to run in both directions? I'm sure it's possible someway...

If your single phase motor has the right number of leads to be reversible you should be able to use a DPDT switch to do it.

When you wire up your VFD to your KMG, think ahead about replacing the 1ph motor for the disk in the future and add a socket/plug/switch right now so when you get your 3ph motor, it'll be almost plug and play.
