Theres lots of great choices out there. One thing you may consider is what he has the potential to use it for. If he lives in an urban area and doesn't do much outdoor type stuff than the SAK might be a good choice. If he's doing any type of mechanics,constuction, or agricultural type work than a Leatherman Wave would be a great choice ( or a gerber 600, In like them better but the wave might fit a 13 year old's hand better).
Or if you simply want to go with a knife, I would go for a medium sized locking knife. One of the smaller axis locks would be great. Or maybe an outdoor edge paragee or camilus EDC.
I really like stockman and trapper pattern knives also. There's a potential to get him interested in whitling with one of these.
It would be cool if you could get him a hard arkansas stone to go with it. They're cheap, easy to find and are pretty much an all around stone. They can take a knife all the way to shaving but cut fast enough to set bevels too( with some elbow grease
). And all you need is WD40 or another light oil to use it.
