I had a situation a couple of nights ago and had some trouble deciding what to do about it. I will tell you what i did at the end but just wanted your opinions on if i did what was right.

I live in the Dorms ar my University which say they do not allow knives at all in the dorms. Well one night late i went to use the bathroom and i could smell beer from the hall (we have community bathrooms). So when i went into the bathroom their was beer on the floor and a stiletto switch blade on the bathroom counter. I was amazed that a switch blade was just sitting their. I picked it up and started to play with it (as any knifenut would :D ) and realized they had been using it to shotgun beers and forgot it on the counter. I was puzzled as what to do with it as it wasnt a microtech but not one of the real cheapies. I estimated it to be about a $30 switchblade from what I have seen at some gun shows. I knew who it belonged to because this kid constantly has parties in his room and they were the ones in their shot gunning beers.
This brought me to the point of not knowing what to do. My options were :
1. Give the knife back and give a bunch of drunk kids knife to play with.
2. Keep the knife and add it to my collection (gave it some serious thought :D ) , but i am not allowed to have simple folders yet a switchblade...
3. Leave the knife in the bathroom to be found by an RA, dorm worker or a student.
4. Give the knife back to the kid in the morning.
5. Throw the knfie away.

Well when i evaluated my options i didnt want to give it back then because i didnt want anyone getting hurt with it. I didnt want to keep the knife because the last thing i need being found in my room is a switch blade (well maybe if it was a Microtech :D ). I didnt want to leave it in the bathroom because if someone found it I was affreaid they would report it and maybe cause a room search for our hall and seeing as I have a couple of knives already I figured they would blame it on me. I didnt want to wait till morning because i did not want the knife in my room and figured he might do it again. So I wrapped it in paper towels and threw it in the garbage so their would be no trouble. I was wondering what you guys would have done in this situation.

Well, I tend to just let everything be. But I'm weird like that.

Say, do you go to UT? Toured there last summer. Pretty neat university, I might add. Dorm to the clouds. Dorms are taller than florida would be if you stood it on its side.

Yes I am a student at UT and I love it here, its a great University. I actually stay in those towering dorms called Jester that have 14 floors.

Lurp,

It seems to me that you did everyone a favor and did the right thing in a situation where he and the university are both being stupid.

Take Care,
Jeff

You should have held onto it until he was sober and then handed it back, sheesh! It wasnt a ticking bomb

I would have stashed it somewhere, and then told the guy where he can find it. (assuming I am paranoid and know the owner.)

Number 2 football in the country, too. But TCU's coming up fast, 14th now. Out of curiosity, how is the atmosphere? Is it as hyper liberal as it's portrayed? How nice are the folks there? One of the reasons I didn't attend was I'm not big on huge school atmosphere and hyper liberal environments.....but I never got a chance to find out if that's really what it felt like.

I'm glad to be part of a school with a #2 football, #1 baseball, #3 basketball and in top 25 in almost all other sports, which means if your a sports fan you really cant go wrong. Well I'm from NY in a very liberal area so its not much of a change for me...but i would say their is alot of liberals here and it is a pretty liberal enviroment unfortunately. I mean Austin in itself is VERY liberal and houses alot of wierd people also, which makes the enviroment off campus liberal also. I find though on campus their is also alot of Conservatives because UT draws students from all over Texas which is a very conservative state. I would just say the voice of the liberals is louder on campus. I find the people here very friendly and I enjoy it (For me since im a "yankee" i call it Southern Hospitality hahaha). I am not a fan of very liberal enviroments either, but I am a fan of UT sports and its Engineering program and thats why im here today :-).

Be glad it's a switchblade, and not a wooden letter opener. Otherwise, you could be in serious trouble.

lmao no kidding

I would have either left it there or thrown it away.

Well, if i find a knife i know towhom it belongs i would give it back. But in that situation, where it was lost by someone who #1 keeps a knife even though it is restricted and forgets about it and # drinks beer in the secret i wouldn´t give much about his seriousity and would go for "self defense.

Keep out of that situation. If you keep it or give it back you may be connected to this situation and get trouble where no trouble is necessary.

So best was to throw it away. Be sure it will not found there. Yours was best because if nothing is found, nobody will ask or search for something.

I would not have a look on the knife, look at the idiot who lost it there.

I see, rules at the dorm are harsh, no matter if you like it or not.

Not my knife, not my problem. But if I leave it there and some flunky finds it and gets everyone in the dorm searched to find where it came from, it becomes my problem.

So you did the right thing to protect yourself from the irresponsibility of someone leaving it out in the open. Disappear it permanently.

Should've gave it back right then or gave it back in the morning. If you lost your knife and someone found it what would you want them to do with it? Sure as hell not throw it away.

Well, I hope you never find one of my knives.:D I would have given back in the morning, you might have made some cool knifeknut friends. And what were the odds someone would have found it in your room if it was there overnight? You seem a bit too paranoid.:o (But that doesn't mean that the people watching you aren't watching you either.:D )

Imho, i cant see myself throwing it away.

I might have hung onto it till morning, by stashing it somewhere safe in case there was suprise inspection or something, then tracked buddy down, and possibly given a little lecture on responcibility of knives left laying around.

The worst choice may have been returning the same night, he may have thought something stupid like you stole it an we're showing it off to him or the likes, could have turned out bad.

In the end, i do think you made a smart choice aswell friend.(Best for all)

Peace

I'd have done #4, especially if I knew who it belonged to. If I didn't know exactly who owned it, I would have waited until the next day and asked around low-key if anyone lost something.

Yeah, you really can't go wrong with sports or engineering at UT...as well as a lot of other things there. Very respected institution. Let me know next time you're going to a knife show in Texas (I'm a TCU student).
