What would you have done?

I mean Austin in itself is VERY liberal and houses alot of wierd people also, which makes the enviroment off campus liberal also.

And I am proud to be one of those very liberal and weird people. :D

I agree with Esav. That knife left there in the open could have caused you some discomfort if the rooms were searched. Throwing it away was probably the safest thing to do.

If it had been me, though, I would have returned the knife to the owner (probably once he sobered up) and given him a little lecture about leaving switchblades in the bathroom.

BTW, do all universities in the US tell grown men that they can't have their knives?

Maybe i was a little paranoid but I just didnt want to have to deal with it and didnt want to cause and rukus about it so i threw it away...If it was me who lost it (which is impossible since i keep my knives on lock down :-)) I guess i would have wanted it back, but if it was a $25 knife and I was irresponsible with the knife like he was it wouldnt have bothered me that much and i also would not have deserved it back.

Well Artfully Martial if you would actually let me know next time your going to one around TX because i have no clue as where to find the knife shows :p . I usually go to the Crockett Convention Center gun show which usually has a nice selection of guns and usually the same dealer with some good knives, but other than that I dont know of any knife shows around here, but i woul LOVE to go if you informed me and it was pretty close (I dont have a car but i have a couple of friends who would probably like to go).

Franciscomv, Yes as I know it all University''s have banned knives not just from the dorms but from ANYWHERE on campus...I also hear that they are trying to make "The Communist Manifesto" by Carl Marx a manditory read for an University student...:D

That is one of the cool things about TCU is a pretty good distribution of crazy liberals and moderate/conservatives...with the exception of Baylor and A&M, colleges, I find, are liberal in general. Tons of knife fans here at TCU, and students carrying big pocket knives is not a noticeable deal here. For instance, I had to open a packet of tests this morning, so I just pulled out my D2 minigrip and opened it up in front of my professor. Not even a glance. Everytime friends come over, they have to play with the knives. I guess they're just enjoying the Fort Worth atmosphere. About half my guy friends that still live in dorms carry pocket knives. Really a cool place.

Yeah, I'll bet Fort Worth (cow town?) has a ton of these shows. I'm still learning myself, having only lived here a couple months now, but having just an amazing time. I figure it's...a few hours from Austin? Might be too far for you guys, but if you're willing, I'll keep my ears open. Give you a little tour of the campus mabye. Probably good for you UT guys to rub shoulders with the elite :D

I SO almost went there. I mean, we're talking millilmeter almost. There was a strange chain of circumstances that lead me from one university to another last summer when I was finally picking.

Oh, and I bought my D2 minigrip at Cabela's outside of Austin...Buda I think? I was there on my way to tour the university and it was an absolute misery to do the several hour tour without my new and beloved knife.

I think you did the correct thing. The guy who owns it doesn't care about it so doesn't deserve it. Soon as he abandanded it consider it lost. No need to risk a room search on yourself because of some one else's drunken stupidity.

I wouldn't have touched it at all. No sense putting finger prints on it if someone would later find it and do something violent with it. I'd just leave it there and maybe go down to the guys having the party and be like "Did you leave a knife in the bathroom? You might want to go grab it before someone else finds it."

I would have taken it back to them and shotgunned a beer with them.

I like the throwing away route. Be sure to tell him you did it, too. Asshats like that don't need to be carrying around knives, especially autos, on campus. That's just looking to screw over everyone.

I can't believe you threw it out. I REALLY can't believe all the people on here that condone your actions.

Either leave it alone or give it back. The guy might have forgotten it for 10 minutes and he might be a good guy. People who drink beer don't automatically turn into insane terrorists or anything, sheesh. And searching your rooms? WTF? Why would they/ how could they search your rooms based on finding a switchblade in the bathroom?

I dunno. Maybe college has changed in the last few years. Do they search your rooms on a regular basis? Landlords can't do that. Cops can't do that without a warrant.

I would have taken it, played with it for a few hours and then given it back the next day.

NO, I think the best thing would be to hold it til morn and give it to him and then get a beer of his and tell him to be more carful. Dude, if this was his best knife he may be lost without it. I agree with brewthunda. I'm new here but PLEASE don't ever throw MY knife away. I'm attached to them. We have been using knives and drinking beer and whisky for how long. Hell, that's how most of this land you are on was traded. You gave us whisky we gave you a knife and then you took our land. WTF is right! Don't be scared to stand up and tell who ever that you have rights too. oh hell there I go again. By for now.

lotta $#its changed since an incident called 9-11.

universities have the right to search dorm rooms, students already consent to that when they sign for and apply for dorm rooms.

Hmmm... UToledo, BG, UM, Ohio State, Wright State. There's 5 off the top of my head that don't care, so long as you follow local law.

I would have pocketed it and given it back in the morning, whenever the person was sober.

Uhhh.. any chance he or any of his friends might log onto bladeforums and find this thread?

That would stink.

You should have just called the Campus Police and said that a bunch of drink guys were in the bathroom and threatened you with a switchblade but then ran when smoeone came to help you, and you knew who it was and you had the knife...... Just kidding. You did the right thing.
