Hello,

This is my first post. I am looking to get a new EDC knife since I lost my old one. (it wasn't anything special) I do not know much about knives but would like to learn as much as i could.

I am looking for:
-folding knife
-tanto blade(doesn't have to be)
-NOT serrated
-STRONG BLADE TIP
-has a clip
- 3-4 inch blade
-all around durability
-keep a sharp edge for a while
-price MUST be UNDER 65$ tops

Weight isn't much of an issue.

What would you recommend?
What do you carry every day and what do you use it for?

Sounds like one of the old style Gunsite folders offered by Cold Steel would fit the bill to me. Many dealers are selling these at a discount to move them since Cold Steel has changed the design and now uses the Triad lock in most of their models. Speaking of which you could find a Triad lock model with a Tanto blade too if they are out and offered yet. Not sure of the cost of a new one though.

Oh and a Recon 1 Tanto by Cold Steel would have the Triad lock, which is in my opinion one of the most impressive locks made today, and that one is for sure available because I've seen them.

There are other fine tanto blades out there but well out of your price point.

considered the price point and your needs, I think I agree with mr.STR.
Coldsteel offer a lot of knives that can fill your needs with Triad lock (the strongest locking mechanism they said)
1)coldsteel lawman 3.5" strong drop point blade for around $60
2)coldsteel ReconI 4" strong tip Tanto point as you wish or clip point for $63
3)coldsteel rajah III has a khukri blade for 3.5" and strong steel liner, for about $50
all are in AUS8A steel which is quiet adequate ;)
or you can go for a spyderco endura. It'll keep an edge for quiet a while, but is not as durable as Coldsteel triad folder and not tanto blade either

Personally, I'd ditch the tanto blade for an EDC. A Spyderco Persistence or Tenacious is a solid knife for the price-point you're talking. Great ergos and durable G-10. I wouldn't qualify it as having an exceptionally strong blade tip per se but certainly quality for the $.

I would say get the CRKT M21-02G (3inch blade, $31), or the CRKT M21-04G(3.875 inch blade, $41) both have an 8cr14 steel blade and you can either get it in tanto or bellie blade. Very strong and light, great EDC folders. I have the CRKT M21-02G and the M12-14SF which is serrated and has dual flippers.

If you want a tanto look into a Kershaw Tanto groove. My non-tanto suggestion would be a Kershaw Blur. Both are around 50$.

Cold Steel Recon 1 or AK-47

Since it doesn't have to be a tanto, I would have to suggest the Kershaw Junkyard Dog 2. It retails for 85 but I just bought one online for 47 shipped. It's a beefy blade with good ergos IMO. Love it.

I just bought a Spyderco Delica 4 for 49.99 with free shipping that would seem to fit your description pretty well.

Spyderco Enduras can be had for under 50. I handled one at Plaza in So Cal and it felt awesome. It's made with VG-10 steel too, which in my experience has been wonderful. If you want assisted opening, also check out the Kershaw Blur. If not, the Skyline has received some pretty rave reviews recently.

Paid $60 for this beast! Very strong knife. :)

:o :o :o
dude, how did you do that? did you grind it yourself or someone did it for ya?
If you did it, can you tutor me? Is it that difficult?

It was a little project. It took a couple ours one day and a couple the 2nd day. I took it apart, used my S30V Random Leek's razor sharp blade and a thin, sharpened flat screwdirver to scrape it all off. Not bad at all. Some areas came off in larger sweeps and some parts took more time & patience.

Re-profiled the tanto junction and the edge with DMT dia-folds. Super easy with the magna-guide (for rounding the tanto profile) and took it right to xx-fine, then strops and a mirror polish. I left it around 40* for strength instead of laying it back to some smaller bevel.

I really dig it now and I forgot to add - lightly sanded the spot where the pocket clip hits the g-10 for a smooth in and out of the pocket. :)

It is cool.
I can't wait to do it my self
thanks for the tutorial.
I'm just afraid that if I sand the blade it will ruin the heat treatment on it :P
the satin blade does look really good.
since it's a medium size knife and probably used as an edc, why don't you sharpen it into 30* razor sharp edge? It'll be a good slicer I think
and the tip will never break
BTW I think the strongest folder under $50 must be the recon 1, nothing else ;) just get it, Trodio

Thanks Dao.Hung_105. The Recon-1 is about $57 to $60+ depending on where you shop. And btw I did this knife after two other members did theirs and you don't snad them. You scrape the coating off. One member used a high power paint remover - but it didn't stop him from having to scrape areas.

My advice would be easy does it!! Find a narrow and thin - flat head screwdriver and sharpen it, I did most of mine that way and the rest - the hardest to remove - I got off with a razor sharp knife edge, which had to be re-sharpened too after the project (it was S30V steel too).

If you just start scraping you'll feel your flat head or knife blade either slide off or bite in. You want it to bite in at a shallow angle and it leaves a perfect stonewashed blade underneath.

If you're in a hurry then get a heavy duty paint stripper. Work over an old white canvas or a sheet (better) if possible so dropped screws don't get lost. I didn't but I'm very OCD about organizing my screws and parts. I had to search for a screw a couple of times.

Don't forget to heat up the screws with a blow dryer to defeat the blue lock-tite and then push down real hard on the torx screws before turning them out. Good luck, you'll be glad you did it in a few days.
