I just saw there is another maker using a stamp like mine . Here is one I made
askew knife.jpg

and I just saw this http://www.bandofbladesmiths.com/mitch-askew/ and a couple of his has a similar mark

I dont want there to be any confusion so I want to change mine.

Which looks/sounds better to you - B.Askew or BrittAskew or something different ?

Mitch has used a great variety of marks on his blades, the most recent of which looks to be "ASKEW -MAKER-". I wouldn't change what you have, unless you leave very near him and local customers might be confused. You have every right to use your name however you wish to present it at this level. That would change if you started selling hundreds per year, but that's when lawyers get involved.

The fact that your mark doesn't say maker underneath seems to make it different enough, maybe if you changed to a cursive font that would separate you even more

The internet makes it a small world. Getting lawyers involved in the farthest thing from what I want and I am sure he would say the same. I just want there to be no confusion as to who made what knife. I did send Mitch an email this morning showing him my mark.

Good thing is there are only a couple of my knives out there ( they wouldnt quit bugging me even though I tell them I am not ready). I have quit counting but I have made close to 100 knives now , the one in the picture was about 40 or 50 knives ago, and all but a couple have been either tossed in the trash or in a drawer and wont be seen until I die. My family and friends have kinda talked junk to me for a while now about this but I keep thinking in my head that one bad knife is worse that 100 good ones and I just havnt felt ready. The knife of mine above was cropped from this picture , 003.jpg the top one is my very first which I kept and the bottom three ended up in the junk drawer. I am getting real close to ready to go public. I plan to start selling soon and hope to sell a couple hundred knives in 2015

I am leaning towards B.Askew

B.Askew would solve the problem.
What is often done is putting the location ether below the name or on the reverse. Askew over Raleigh, NC would solve any confusion.

Don't worry about being sued. There are no lawyers going to get involved over names and knives. If you were named Askew by your parents, and someone else was too, that is part of the real world. No one can make you change your name. Even John Q. Buck can legally mark his knives BUCK....as long as he doesn't copy any logos. I certainly wouldn't go that far, but Askew isn't a big worry.

There are knives out there from different makers with the same first and last name. Imagine how many knives are marked J.SMITH

One bad knife can be an opportunity to show excellent customer service. I had one bad one, and the customer is a repeat customer, as I made it right, and better than the original order. I bought a hardness tester to make sure my heat treat was where I needed it to be right after that.
