What would your occupation be in 1200 AD?

I think your life expectancy, Rob, would then be less than that of a soldier.

im telling ya, we all need to join the church. Lots of T&A, easy job, lots of $$ and your son inherits your position...

My family at that time (at least on my father's side) were indeed blacksmiths. I think I might go in for the wandering Tinker thing though. Thought about "court advisor", wizard, doctor, and engineer, but all those positions are high enough profile to attract the eye of somebody with the power of head removal (should you irk their sensibilities in some way).....not something I want to contemplate.

Or, there is always my mother's side (Scandinavian) in which case I would guess I would be stuck on a ship with a bunch of crazy men and yapping little grey dogs: (norwegian elkhound breed hasn't changed a whit in 8,000 yrs if some people are to be believed)

I'd be the guy that wasn't good at anything and died. I'm as blind as a bat without glasses.

I'd probably end up a eunuch or something
BruiseLee

You'd probably end up working with me.

 :D  :D Yep, you're probably right! We could always join the boys' choir as sopranos and perform at Balls (I know, the irony is painful)

Aye, not unlike those lusty Goliards! Ahh, I harbour a more glamourized vision of busty wenches of the middle ages!

I could probably make it as a scribe.. maybe... but most realistically I'd probably end up like one of those sorry peasants in the background of Monty Python and the Holy Grail... you know, the ones doing seemingly pointless tasks like beating a stream with a stick, or whipping a highly resilient cat against a wall.

Invent glasses!!! Be rich and famous and burned at the stake for witchcraft. btw -I'm in the same boat.

moat digger...
have some pretty good outdoor skills... so maybe a hermit in the mountains...

hopefully get an aprenticeship doing some kind of craft, always wanted to try blacksmithing...

but my Info Tech degree definently wouldnt do me much good in that time period...

Town drunk, or maybe a Sorcerer, I'm always conjurin' up sumptin' or another and I've always been pretty mechanical, ooh better yet, a pharmacist.:D

A Blacksmith or similar craft is appealing, but you guys may be overlooking the the premise Ted set: even a modern High school education (well, maybe not modern) would be superior to that of the folks you interacted with. I think any one of us would quickly be regarded with some respect certainly and perhaps awe. You could read, write, and do basic mathmatical calculations anyway unlike the vast majority of folks you dealt with. There would be some barter value in that I'm sure.

I think I would invent aspirin and soap and showers, and perhaps my own local brand of whisky. :D All good for barter as well. Maybe do some brickmaking, which could also prove useful.

The rest of my time would be spent building a comfortable homestead, learning how to craft things for myself, and praying that I never needed another root canal...

I'm ashamed of you guys! You all (including me) picked low end jobs. Not one of you aspired to royalty, tax collector, bishop, or anybody else who could claim crops, tithes, or first night wedding rights! How about being Robin Hood or a knight in shining armor. Or the Sheriff of Nottingham! Lowlifes!

few blacksmiths "lost their heads" or had their kingdom overrun and sacked....:D :p

DK makes a good point. Besides, the hoi polloi Coldwood lists got their living by robbing, oppressing, and/or murdering helpless people. I'd druther wind up in Heaven, thanks.

Okay, I don't know how true this is, but I remember reading somewhere how villagers would break a blacksmith's feet, so he wouldn't go wandering off to another village  Because he was too valuable to lose! Sounds like an urban legend or something out of Monty Python ;) But it makes one think about the jobs we have, or have had, and how management might have manipulated us to stay in place.
