My friend is a knife maker who work with low alloy carbon steel 52100. He has digital control gas oven.

I plan to get some stainless foil to wrap the blade to prevent decarb.

This is the recipe that I intend to do.

Pre-heat to 1500F soak for about 15 min
Austenitizing at 1975 soak for 35 min
Quench in air with high velocity blower
When it warm enough to able to touch, immediately put it in liquid nitrogen, soak 60 min
Temper 400F for 2 hours, 3 times.

I would like to hear your suggestions, Thank

sounds good to me i run a hair hotter but 1975 will be just fine
i like quench plates both for quench speed and warp prevention jsut watch with that air blast and keep things even

Thank you butcher_block

Will aluminium plate quench achieve much higher quench speed compare to air blast?

What about quench the steel in 200F vegetable oil?

I use 1" aluminum plates to prevent any warping and have a blower that pushes air between the plates. Oil quench is tricky if you have the blade in foil since you would have lag time getting the blade out of the foil.
