Thats a great start. However how thick is it? Those bevels should be taken up at least 3/4 of the blade than a secondary bevel for the cutting edge. great job so far though!

A good start I have to say, my bevel grinding looks like a mess at the start...
Dont forget to flatten the tang, it looks like the top corner has been rounded at the 4th pic.

yup, i still have a little flattening to go, i didnt want to flatten all the way down right away because i know that when i start moving through the grits ill be taking more away and it should work itself out.as far as the bevel, i am curious as to how far up the second bevel should be?

Ed and Jason, if that is the 5160, it should be approximately .204 thick. At least that is what I was told when I bought it, but I never did measure it to confirm. -Matt-

One thing I finally learned after a couple years is to not expect things to always clean up in the grit progression... sometimes you just find you've gone through a bit of paper and have to back up and fix it anyway. Unless you're using something really coarse to work it out you won't have to remove too much thickness to polish it back up.

here is a little more progress. i ground the rest of the scratches out and got it down past that rounded part on the handle.

It looks to me that there aren't any flats on the handle as well as the blade. Sure it won't matter on the blade because you have lots more grinding to do there but I suggest you get those handle flats ground down before you do more on the blade. Hey, just the way I would do it. Frank

what do you mean by handle flats? the handles are flat minus one nick on top the handle, if thats what you mean.
