In the field of course! i know some stone can be used but would like to know what guys have when you are out in the bush. I tried to use diamond sharpeners but I seem to dull the edge more than sharpen it. I really good with honing stones which I use when I want put wicked edge on it before I go out in to the bush and when I get home. Right now I use a lansky dog bone sharpener, smith sharpening rod with rat tail, and my leather belt that I always wear when out and about.

I remember they used to make some with a leather sheath that you put it in. Does anybody carry small honing stones out in bush? If so please list what you use and where I can find one that is small but big enough to sharpen a 6"+/- blade knife
How about the one fallkniven makes does anybody currently use it?

I use different grits f sandpaper stretched over a mousepad fpr my convex edged knives, for my flat groung one I use a dmt diamond hone....however more often than not stropping on a loaded leather strop will keep even my most heavily used blade shaving shap almost indefinitely

I do use small flat pebbles that I find - they're good for touching up an edge since the "real" sharpening is done at home. If I'm carrying a convex blade I just use whatever leather surface is available.

You might want to check out ragnar's viking whetstone:

-been meaning to get one myself...

When I'm out for more than a day hike, I throw a double-sided Spyderco 'spyder stone' in my pack. It comes in a leather sheath and is great for touch-ups. I often enjoy sharpening my camp knife for a few minutes by the fire before turning in.

Best,

EZ -Lap 4" diamond stone. I learned to free hand sharpen when I was very young and I can sharpen everything from a camp hatchet to a pocket knife on that stone.

I'm very new to sharpening, but I bought a very small stone 3"x1"x".5" or something that has a small leather sheath. But, I'm not very good with stones, so I'm eyeing a small Lansky multi-sharping stick: http://www.lanskysharpeners.com/LTRIM.php

I should have my Spyderco Sharpmaker tomorrow! Got it through Amazon for around $50.

A.G. Russell has several field sharpeners: http://www.agrussell.com/accessories/sharpening.html

They have more in the store, but I don't know how many live in NW Arkansas. AG also gives discounts for military, police, etc... but that also might be just for the store.
