It never fails.Every time I show one of my friends,co-workers,or family one of my new knives, someone always says "What'd you pay for that?" or "How much did that cost?".It kind of bugs me,not that much though.I think what bugs me the most is the "gasps" when I tell them how much,& they act like I got ripped off or I'm crazy,or something:rolleyes:.
I try to explain to them about the higher end materials used,& the close tolerances involved. If it's a custom,I tell them it's "hand made",& takes a lot more time than a production knife. It all seems to go in one ear & out the other, most of the time.I've reached a few though.
Lately when I get the question,I just reply "A LOT".:D

Does it bother you when someone asks how much you paid for your knife?

Most civilians do not understand our OBSESSION

Yeah they gasp when I tell them how much my knives cost, but will go out and spend as much or more on something they have and not even blink an eye. ;)

Yeah I know how you feel. My family couldn't understand ever since I told them about my Mnandi and the tight tolerances. They were like "what does that tight a tolerance even do?" so now I don't waste my breath. I'm lucky my girl let's me tell her about my knives and even feigns interest.

It's not just knives. People also scoff at the money I pay for good computer components, or electronics, or video games, or other things that matter to me and not to them. And plenty of us laugh when we here about what other people spend their money on.

The truth is, people spend money on things that matter to them. No one has to understand why you are willing to pay $200+ for an Emerson or a Spyderco or a Sebenza - it's important to you, and that's what matters.

Exactly.

To each thier own , I have friends who drop big money on old VW's , firearms , home theater etc... everyone has their poison.

I've gotten that exact question.:D

Since most of my friends happen to be girls, for whatever reason, I usually ask them how much their purse cost. About 90% of the time, their purse is "worth" almost twice as much as whatever I'm carrying at the moment.

I've learned that purses are usually a better thing to compare knives to than shoes.

Dear god...never ever get a girl started on shoes.

Ha - you think knives are bad. Try it with a $150 damascus steel benchmade pen and see the looks you get...

It doesn't bother me. It's my money and I buy what I want and can afford. If I need to save for something that I want, then I do it.

I get the same crazy looks as everyone else when asked. One time a buddy asked about my spyderco military. I said bout 140 and he almost S a brick. I looked at his shoes and asked how much those nike's cost and he said something like 120 or so. I said well those will only last you about a year or so, my knife will last about forever. Also are those shoes made out of better material then cheaper shoes? Are they made in the USA? Nope.

I think he kinda understands now when I put it like that. Or mYbe he still thinks I'm crazy

There is also the fact that in a year those nikes are worthless and our knives hold their value for quite a while your military could still fetch 75%+ on what you paid for it.

Also good knives last forever.

Usually when someone who I know is interested in knives ask me how much one of my knives costs, I'll tell them; "somewhere in the neighbor hood of" and give them a pretty close ballpark figure. However, if it someone is asking just to be asking, I'll tell them; "Just enough to get it out the store's door".

John, there is simply no way to get through to them. I've tried:D Once while working at the tavern, I had brought in a very rare low production number folder to show an old collector I know who likes to see my latest finds. Another customer/friend asked to see and asked what I paid for it. When I told him something in the neighborhood of $400 he laughed, said "yeah right!" and tossed across the bar at me!!:eek: Considering that we are usually messing around with each other I can understand why he thought I was pulling his leg, but I still wasn't happy that my folder got tossed! I've learned to either warn people of the value before letting them handle it, or I simply refuse to hand them over to anyone at all, depending on who's asking!

It's a bit annoying, I agree...but the bottom line? They just don't get it!!!;)
