What'd you pay for that?

You have to remember that most people outside of BF buy their knives at places like Wal Mart and Sporting goods stores, flea markets so they really have no clue what good knives really are.

For most paying over something like $40 for a folder is expensive to them, to others $20 is expensive.

I would say they could be shocked when my Strider SmF is worth more than the car they are driving..... Don't even get me started on my Busses. :D
 
i usually just say "A good amount" or something vague like that...and i usually dont let anyone who is unfamiliar to knives hold them
 
I only tell a couple of people, maybe. If non-knife people know you have a spiffy blade sometimes they want to check it out and do something stupid with it.
My boss says I should put the money towards a Rolex. He drools at the idea of owning a $12,000 watch.
My sister thinks I should put the money towards a Vegas visit, or ONE really fancy restaurant family dinner thing.

In 1969 I bought a Montblanc Meisterstueck. It cost over $30.

At this point, the pen guys reading this are laughing. Shortly afterwards, we went off the gold standard and the Montblanc -- gold clip, nib, and trim -- went for $300.

Even today, the high-end pens, especially the fountain pens, cost a good bit more than that Benchmade damasteel -- which I've been seriously considering. :)
 
You're right, they don't understand and probably never will. People can't seem to see the parallels between what they spend on "discretionary goods"/hobby items and what we spend. I view spending $ a knife as much more useful than on a golf club, rare postage stamp, etc., because at least the knife has a practical use.

When people ask how much a knife costs, I consider who is asking. If it's someone who understands or at least appreciates the hobby, then I'll tell them. If it's someone who doesn't understand, then the answer is "plenty."

Yeah, like others have said it's silly because the amount you spend on a knife is almost sure to be "too much" to someone who doesn't appreciate knives. Of course they'll spend their money on some other luxury that appeals to them.
 
When I was growing up back in the dark ages, it was considered to be very rude to ask the cost of someone else's possesions. Now it seems that everyone feels free to intrude upon, and make comments about, your choices.

There is no obligation imposed upon you, none whatsoever, to answer a rude question. So I don't. I ignore the question entirely.
 
If it's someone I know is a knife person, I'll tell them. If not, well, let's just say I quit answering that question when I bought my first Randall.

I've tried similar things with relatives, but their "big number" guess was still usually under $50 when looking at my UG Sebenza.

These days relatives/friends ask about the price with the expectation that it's expensive since they know I'm type on $300 keyboards and EDC a $400 flashlight. Guess they got used to the "outrageous" prices of my toys.
 
Its the same way with AR's. I'll tell someone what I paid for my Noveske N4 and they're like:eek: "Well hell son I can get a DPMS for like $700. " They just dont understand that quality cost and that there is a BOG difference between Noveske and DPMS.
 
Nah, nobody asks how much they cost.

They would however bring out their $20 knives and start bragging to me about them, after I pulled out my Emmerson/zt/bm/5.11 to cut something open.

Then again given my financial situation, having $800+ knives is probably the furthest thing from a sane decision (My rule is, once the money goes in the toy/tool budget it stays there).
 
Yes ! i get that question a lot , and I HATE it .. people looking at me like I am crazy if I tell them how much Sebenza or custom cost , I am not answering this anymore .
People who ask this question usually don't know anything about knifes so explaining doesn't work .
and person who knows knifes wont ask you how much sebenza cost .

not to get too too off-topic, but when I look at the prices on some of the maki-e pens it blows my mind. of course, unlike people who don't understand the value of a knife, I would have no problem spending a few thousand on a nice pen if I could afford it.
 
Nah, doesn't bother me when they ask. And they usually do ask. Usually, though, I carry a less expensive (see: more abusable) knife for work, so that's usually the one that people see me use most. It doesn't really raise any eyebrows when I tell them I'm using a 30$ or 50$ kershaw. Still, even when I carry my Benchmade Presidio, I'm not ashamed to tell people how much I paid for it when they ask. I don't really see why some folks seem to get really worked up over it :confused:.

Actually, it happens that I was pretty surprised at work one day when a buddy of mine pulled out his SOG Flash II and passed it around. I asked him how much he paid for it, and he informed me he dropped over 160$ on the thing :eek:. Another guy saw us carrying on, and he showed us his Kershaw Spec Bump (seemed like a fantastic blade...if it didn't have recurve, I'd be all over it). He described it as a "$250 knife" :eek:.

Turns out the Tanto Blur I paid 30$ for was just about the cheapest knife in the room, hahaha.

I look at the guys on watch forums and :eek:

Wife and I own a Rolex and no other watches, yet we both have a decent collection of knives. Everything is subjective. Enjoy your toys.

My wife's family doesn't even ask how much the newest toy costs. They know its a lot.
 
I am willing to tell friends what my knives cost just so they know that if they can actually borrow(not bloody likely, in an English accent) it they treat it like glass or pay for it if they break it.

I've been considering a William Henry pen...or maybe one of the pen/knife sets they do once in a while.
