Whatever happened to moderately-priced Barlows?

I grabbed a Western 822 Barlow today for 20 Bucks. It took a hour to clean it up and sharpen it. It seemed to have never been sharpened at all just bought and throw in some shop draw for the past 30 years . It had lightly rusted blades and had lint in the frame.

Now I'm jealous! :)

I bought (and gave away) an Imperial Schrade Barlow Jackmaster to a woman that wouldn't know the difference. (Her pocket knife had been stolen). I then bought her nephew the Rough Rider Orange Bone Peanut for his upcoming eighth birthday. After purchasing the "real" Camillus TL29, I just want a great user that whill hold a marvelous edge without forcing myself to go hungry.

I guess that I'll have to "save my shekels" and buy the Queen.

If you look hard, Sheffield-made barlows can be had for ~$40 shipped, and they are excellent value and make fantastic user knives!

Beside what has been mentioned the newer Robeson Barlows are more moderately priced in the $60's but I just looked at the only dealer I know that sells them and they are out of stock again.

The Uticas are 1095 or 420HC. Unfortunately it sounds like they're still mixing the steels on knives that are supposed to be one or the other. I have one I like just fine, except for that.

Hen and Rooster makes some in Spain, but they have a funny shape to them.

There plenty of Imperial and Colonial Barlows out there for cheap if you look.

I have finally decided that I'll spend the money on the Queen. (At my age, this should last me the remainder of my days). I'll probably carry it in rotation with my Case Yellow Delrin CV Peanut. Granted it will be heavier than the 'nut, but when the D2 blade is really sharp, (and I mean really sharp), I'll be able to sit on the porch and whittle all day long without even an errant thought given to honing the blade being used. Let's see... D2 steel, Stag horn scales, brute strength in a folding pocket knife... *whistle* Boy howdy, it doen't get much better than that.

This is what I've been looking for in a Barlow.

Post us a picture when you get.

If you go to the Tramp Steamer Anonymous Knives website, you can see how it looks. (I can't post pictures from this laptop computer).

I just ordered the Queen Barlow Stag Bone #69 1/2 It is 3 1/2" closed and should be a beauty. I called the owner of the company and told him that it would probably be the last Barlow I'll ever purchase on earth, and would prefer that I had a nice one. He agreed.

I'll let you know when it arrives.

I haven't the ability to post photographs. If you go to the [a non-BF dealer] you can see a picture of the Queen Barlow Stag Bone (pattern 69 1/2). Perhaps you can post it so that others can see Queen's offering in the traditional two-blade Barlow pattern.

I don't have a pic on the phone but if it is anything like mine, you're going to love it.

Do not identify dealers who are not BF dealer members.
Infraction given.

I'd like to add that Queen did make a run of Workhorse Barlows in 1095 that sold for around the $40 mark. That was a screaming deal for a domestically made, solid knife. Kinda wish I'd picked some up just to give away, too bad I've always been distracted by their D2.

The workhorse barlows in delrin/1095 are listed in Queen's recently released 2017 catalog, so they are still in production.
