What's a Decent Bowie Style 7-8 Inches ???

Hey all.

I'd like to ask you all a quick question. I like the blade shape and look of the traditional Bowie styled knives. Don't know why, the look just appeals to me. I'd like to pick one up in the 7-8 inch blade length. This is going to be a knife I will use on occasion when I go bowhunting for feral hogs and camp when the day is done. I don't want to get something so big that it's unwieldy and basically not usable.

I have looked online at several but I am not finding suitable choices. I'd like to keep it less than $125. The Western Bowie and others that are inexpensive seem to be really poor quality and are meant more for show than use.
I went and looked at those Down Under Knives, the guys that make the replica of the Crocodile Dundee knife. They have an 8 inch model called The Walkabout that looks nice and is apparently pretty well made. The problem is they are too much for the budget. I only mention this knife because it's an example of a blade shape that I like.

So, would you all kindly recommend some knives that fit what I'm looking for? I don't keep up with all the various makers and what they have. I'm hoping you all can point me in the right direction. If you have recommendations that are more than my budget, go ahead and post them anyway because I never know what will happen. Circumstances could very well change.

Recommendations please.

Thank you all very much for your time and any help you care to give me.

Hunt a western w49, a hair over you size specs. Nice knives and can be found reasonably if you hunt them.

Get a Cold Steel Recon Scout in 01 or SK5. You will not go wrong. keepem sharp

Tops Desert Nomad might suit you? is a bit over budget (150?) and only 6.6 inches but is meant to be pretty great in use.

I would avoid this brand if I were you, I've seen a failure video on youtube where the knife FAILS and breaks at the pommel. The handle and / or pommel appears to be the weak point. With this company it would appear you're paying for the look of the knife...and not the quality.

Down Under Knives, I believe, are Chinese. Caveat emptor.
Compromise pig sticker /skinner/boner. Svord Hunter 7.

+1 on the Svord pictured above I think it comes in a 6 and 7 inch versions. I have always liked Bark River offerings, more than your budget, but once and awhile you find one. I have been fond of the Rogue model, but you may want more of a guard if you are hog hunting. One custom maker here that sells a good knife, like the camp chopper in the exchange now, is GL Drew.

Bowie machetes, older and newer one (pic) from Cold Steel

Cheap, replaceable, moddable, reliable. And fun ;)

I would go no further than the Condor offerings as far as a bowie knife goes. I assume you are thinking "self defense" hog hunting as far as the knife goes. I just find using knives this big on animals is really clumsy except for processing meat. Then a large knife shines.

Svord Hunter 7- 7 inch blade only
As I say to all pig bowhunters, if you only wound the prey it might;
A- run off, whence you'll need a good tracking dog, with either a loud constant bark or an electric locator collar, for you to kill the pig as an ethical hunter would, or
B- charge you, whence the same dog, silent while you shoot, is tuff enuff to stop an angry charging tusker, so you don't die of a severed leg artery. I'd recommend a hunting line Airedale. You'd pay big money for a dog which could do all that, but it might save your life.

Carry a straight blade double edged hunting sword, only sharpened on the lower half to allow half-swording.

I hope I didn't just preach to the choir.

Hey all.

Thanks for the input and recommendations. As for the Down Under Knives, I'm not interested in buying one. I just mentioned them because I like the blade SHAPE of the Walkabout model which is 8 inches. I was hoping you all were familiar with the look of those Knives so you could more easily give me recommendations that I would like.

As for pigs..... I wouldn't hunt pigs with a knife. I want to kill them with my recurve or longbow. I don't have anything against those that do hunt hogs with a knife and dogs....it's just not for me. I want to have a Bowie along for emergency pig dispatching and any camp chores that might come up. Besides, whenever you get any chance to actually use a big knife, you gotta take it!

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again everyone.

Yeah those dogs are awesome. I've never been around a pig dog, but lots of bowhunters love having a dog with them for just the reasons you mention. Some hunters have a small dig they only bring out when they've hit one good and need to get at it to dress it so as the meat doesn't spoil. They'll bring out the dog and let him go so he can find the downed hog. I've seen guys use small dogs like rat terriers and such to track the blood of a wounded hog.

Naturally no one wants any animal to suffer. A clean, quick kill shot is always the goal but sometimes things don't always happen the way we want them to.

Heck right now I'd just love to find a good spot to go hog hunting in the SE Texas area. I am in the Houston area and its tough to find a place to hunt pigs. If anyone has any help on this front, I would love to talk to you. I'd just about give anything to find a nice place to hunt. So if you can help me, please PLEASE get in touch with me.

Thanks all
Larry

I am not a hunter, but I have wondered with the explosion of the wild pig population, would there more of an effort to increase the hunts for them, sort of like they did for coyotes? Nothing inhumane of course and safety is paramount, but they are very destructive, correct? And I have read where they actually go after the young deer too? Hunters donate the meat from deer, would that also be a possibility?

When I lived in Texas, that was ALWAYS the problem when it comes to hunting unless you have deep pockets.

I know what you mean about doing something that deserves a big knife and when you like knives, you need to treat it as an opportunity.
